Why Mumbai comes alive with the mango season
With its sunny temperament, exquisite aroma, creamy pulp, and simply outstanding flavour, saffron-hued Alphonso will forever be India's 'King of Fruits.' It shouldn't surprise you one bit. Everyone from monarchs to commoners rejoices as it reaches city markets around the nation. Mumbai begins its mango season as early as January, being a major hub for mango trading. Our unique Alphonso comes straight from the fields of the picturesque Konkan coastal belt in Maharashtra. The prized Alphonsos are plucked from the earth between the middle of April and the end of June. This premium fruit only comes around for a brief time each year, but the city of Mumbai is ravenous for it in its homes, restaurants, cafés, and juice stalls.
As you go through the city's fruit stands, the sight of the artistically arranged piles of Alphonsos will captivate your senses. This delicious fruit comes to Mumbai in three stages; the first is in February or March due to the flowering season in October or November, and the city can't get enough of it. The next stage is the blossoming that takes place in the winter months of December and January, and finishes in April with the fruits. The last blooming season, which occurs in February and March, is produced in May. Although weather patterns might change, this is the typical pattern for this time of year. It is not uncommon for wealthy Mumbaikars who are mango-obsessed to plan a trip home during what is known as the "Alphonso Season." Not only are Alphonso mangoes tasty, but they're also pricey and fit for a king when it comes to presents!
