A mirror to the heavens - The mesmerizing beauty of Chandratal
This "moon lake" in Himachal Pradesh is situated at a considerable elevation, halfway between Manali and Spiti Valley, and its breathtaking beauty is sure to captivate you. Arriving at the destination is definitely worth the effort, but getting there is no picnic! Travellers flock here for their bucket list adventures, and the gorgeous blue hue has been the icing on top.
Amazing as the view is, only those with a 4WD can brave the difficult detour off the Manali-Kaza road to get there. However, the sight of the distinctive crescent form will cause you to respond with astonishment when you arrive at the location. When you camp at Chandratal, you truly camp at the moon.
Make an informed decision - The weather at Chandratal Lake

Before you embark on your Chandratal Lake camping adventure, make sure to take stock of the weather before you get there! An integral part of the mysterious charm of Chandratal Lake is the weather. Because of its isolated position, Chandratal Lake is subject to unusual weather patterns that amplify the lake's spectacular splendour while simultaneously posing a challenge to visitors.
The climate of Chandratal Lake is characterised by very low average temperatures and highly variable weather. The lake stays frozen for most of the year, and the area has severe winters with considerable snowfall because of its high elevation. During the winter months of November to March, Spiti experiences below-freezing temperatures, with the lake and its surrounds covered in a heavy layer of snow. The season is extremely difficult since acute mountain sickness can strike at any moment. Underneath a perfect blanket of snow, the lake's brilliant blue waters are concealed, while the surrounding peaks sparkle in the sunshine, transforming the scenery into a winter paradise. So probably skip the camping in Spiti trip in the winter months!

To ensure a cosy stay at Chandratal Lake, it is recommended that you pack thermal layers, a high-quality waterproof jacket, gloves, a cap, and warm socks.
- Keep a sufficient quantity of your prescribed drugs on hand if you have any pre-existing medical issues or require specialised prescriptions. Additionally, have a basic first aid kit available. You should talk to your doctor before venturing to a high-altitude area and make sure you have everything you need to be healthy.

- If you plan on camping at Chandratal Lake, be sure to bring all the necessary gear, including a tent, sleeping bag, camping stove, and cooking utensils. Camping at the lake may not have the best facilities, so be prepared for a more rustic experience.
- Be sure to bring sturdy footwear, trekking poles, a backpack and an additional battery pack for your headlamp if you intend to go to Chandratal Lake. Possessing these items will guarantee your ease and security while hiking.
- Because of Chandratal Lake's high elevation, you'll be exposed to more sun, which might cause skin damage. As you protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays, be sure you have a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen on hand.
