Always check the weather and forecast: Do your homework on the area, be aware of the forecast, and adjust your plans appropriately. Having a loose plan makes things go more smoothly- we know that being spontaneous is part of the fun of travelling alone, but having a solid base plan for your solo trip to Spiti according to the weather is just plain smart!
Prepare your body: Because Spiti is a desert at a high elevation, you should bring clothes to keep warm at night and sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun during the day. Things like food, drink, a first aid kit, and prescriptions should be in your bag at all times. To prevent altitude sickness, it is important to drink enough water and adjust slowly. Start at Nako
Your solo trip to Spiti Valley should start from here. The bus departing from Reckong Peo at 1:30 PM travels via Nako to Sumdo. We recommend checking into a small homestay in Nako which will cost you around 700 INR for the night and normally includes two full meals. Indulge in conversations with the locals and do not forget to visit the Nako monastery. "Butter Salted Tea" is a local speciality, so make sure to try it! Explore Nako village, ascend the small hills, and interact with hospitable locals who will instantly make you feel at home!
Next stop – Tabo
On the way to Tabo, make sure to enjoy the views of riverside orchard fields and parched valleys on the route. If you are lucky, you will be able to spot a few Himalayan ibex and blue sheep. The peace and beauty of the scenery beyond Tabo is mind-blowing – make sure to visit the Tabo Monastery! Since Tabo is usually a midpoint between Nako and Kaza, you will only spend the transit time at this village.
Kaza – the main event
Spiti Valley's major town, Kaza, is a great jumping-off point for adventures into the surrounding countryside. Villages, monasteries, and the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary are all within easy reach. It ranks high among the top attractions in the Spiti Valley. Travellers may enjoy a variety of experiences in Kaza, a tiny town in Spiti Valley. A Buddhist monastery with breathtaking views of the Kaza Mountains, Key Monastery is a popular Kaza attraction that dates back centuries. Komic Village, perched at an elevation of 4,587 meters and renowned for its vibrant culture and customs, is another must-visit destination in Kaza. There is a lively market in town where you may purchase traditional Spitian cuisine, local arts and crafts, and souvenirs. The neighbouring towns of Langza and Kibber are well worth a visit for their beautiful scenery and fascinating local culture.
Do not miss the Key Monastery
In Spiti Valley, not far from Kaza town, is the Key Monastery, a massive and historically significant religious building. Travellers interested in Tibetan Buddhism will find a must-visit location here that provides a range of experiences. The Key Monastery stands out among the other Spiti Valley monasteries. You can take in breathtaking views of the neighbouring mountains from its vantage point of 4,166 metres.
The paintings, manuscripts, and historical artefacts housed at the monastery attest to the region's illustrious past and culture. Praying with the monks and chatting with them about their lives is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in their culture. In addition to a tranquil setting ideal for contemplation and meditation, the monastery has breathtaking views of the neighbouring mountains.
