The results are out, and India has ranked 87th on the 2022 Henley Passport Index from Henley & Partners—an authoritative ranking of the world’s passports. They use exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) on how many destinations a particular passport can provide access to without a prior visa, which means visa-on-arrival. And then rank the ‘strongest’ and ‘weakest’ of the 199 passports from across the globe.

On this year’s Henley Passport Index, Japan has ranked number one on the list and bagged the title of the world’s most powerful passport. This provides the citizens of Japan hassle-free access to approximately 193 countries. Japan is followed by Singapore and South Korea, whose passport holders have access to 192 countries.
Germany, Spain, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, France, Ireland, Portugal, and United Kingdom are a few of the other countries in the top 10 of the 2022 Henley Passport Index. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s passport has been ranked as the least useful, offering visa-free access to only 27 countries. For the uninitiated, this passport index also defines the strength of a particular country’s diplomatic relations with other countries. The more ease of access your country enjoys, the better and higher it ranks on the index.
Countries that provide visa-free access to Indian passport
India, being on the 87th position, allows visa-free access to 60 countries—including Barbados, Iran, Jamaica, Thailand, Nepal, Madagascar, and Tanzania—to its passport holders. Our country has moved up three positions, as compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. In October 2021, India ranked 90th among the 116 countries included in the index. This is when the Indian passport had visa-free access (visa-on-arrival) to 58 destinations. Here’s a list of a few countries that you can consider for your next international trip.
1. Thailand
One of the most preferred and frequented countries by Indian tourists, Thailand is perfect for those who love solitude and serenity. Breathtaking beaches, adventure activities, majestic temples, and lip-smacking street food are a few of the highlights here. 2. Indonesia
Vaccinated travellers from India can apply for a visa on arrival in Indonesia and explore the country’s mesmerising landscapes. The country is gifted with pristine beaches, vibrant tribal culture, active volcanic sites, and interesting wildlife. Bali, Ubud, Gili Islands, Bandung, and Jakarta are a few of the destinations you can explore in Indonesia.
3. Maldives
A popular destination among Indian honeymooners and couples, Maldives is blessed with beautiful beaches, magnificent reefs, and an interesting array of water sports. 4. Qatar
