Yes, you've finally decided to embark on the Spiti Valley bike trip of your dreams — and you have arrived at the right place!

So why is the bike trip to Spiti Valley a part of so many people’s bucket lists?

The Spiti Valley played a significant role in the old Silk Road, which connected China, Tibet, and India via challenging mountain paths. It used to give me the willies to think of the long, lonely journeys that people would do on these routes with little supplies, always on edge from the elements and local conflicts. Anyone in ancient times would have had to make a serious choice to leave the safety of their home and go on the treacherous trek across the Himalayas.

Observing these mountain silk routes is fascinating because, in some places, they have remained untouched by the passage of centuries. Even though centuries have passed since these paths were first discovered by humans, they nevertheless evoke the feeling of an ancient traveller fighting against nature as they traverse dirt roads, braving bitter cold on steep mountain slopes, where both humans and machines are challenged to their limits.

Now that we’ve convinced you (hopefully!), let’s plan the Spiti Valley bike trip itinerary!

You may reach Spiti Valley at any time of year by driving 1448 km, depending on how many stops you make along the way and the initial route you travel. It is also possible to do the trip backwards, from Manali to Shimla, by doing the tribal circuit.

Is there an alternate route? Some tourists also choose to begin their Spiti Valley bike trip at Shimla. Starting in Shimla will make acclimatisation to higher altitudes much easier. In contrast to the Manali-Kaza-Shimla or Manali-to-Kaza-back routes, you won't have to get a permit to cross Rohtang Pass if you follow this route. To acquire the permission, one must shell out the additional cash and dedicate a whole day to visiting the DC office in Manali.

Good to know: Make sure Kunzum Pass is open before setting out on your bike ride across the Spiti Valley. The road will be open from Shimla to Losar, though. If Kunzum Pass is blocked, you will need to reverse your Spiti Valley route—from Losar to Shimla—to Delhi after a few kilometres. See what the latest news is about the Kunzum Pass by visiting the Himachal Tourism website.

Your Spiti Valley bike trip starts from Manali and climbs through the lush Kullu Valley to Sojha. Through lush forests, mountain streams, and breathtaking scenery, you'll make your way down this gorgeous path. The journey continues from Sojha along the treacherous Jalori Pass and into the picturesque Sangla Valley, known for its apple orchards and picturesque scenery.

The moment you step foot in Sangla Valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and exquisitely decorated with historic Tibetan architecture that dates back to the 19th century, you will sense a profound change. As you drive down the tiny lane, you'll see a little trickle of water that's generally in fine shape. Driving on this road, no matter the season, is like being on a supernatural highway — truly one of the high points of your Spiti Valley bike trip (literally!).

Riding through the breathtaking Kinnaur landscapes, you will depart from Sangla and arrive at the peaceful settlement of Nako. Nako Lake and the tranquil splendour of this mountain town, are here for your enjoyment. You pass historic villages and monasteries, like the famous Tabo Monastery and Dhankar Village, on the way from Nako to Kaza, the biggest town in the Spiti Valley. Nako is a popular spot for tourists due to its affordable housing options. The Nako Monastery, dating back to the 15th century, lets you camp on its grounds—a definite perk of this exciting adventure—and makes Nako ideal for everyone, helping you recharge for the latter half of your bike trip to Spiti!

The route between Nako and Key is scenic. Throughout the year, large excavators and road rollers work here, attempting to make the road condition somewhat worse by removing debris. Langza, Komic, and Hikkim are just a few of the world's highest communities that you'll get to see in Kaza. This section is a must-do on the trip because every community has its own distinct culture and stunning scenery. The valley expands out and continues to grow until you reach Kunzum Pass, after you pass through Tabo town. The most breathtaking scenery of the Spiti Valley bike trip will begin after this point.

The journey from Kaza to Chandratal Lake, via Kunzum Pass and the Chicham Bridge, is an arduous but worthwhile one. Along the trip, you'll stop at the villages of Key and Kibber. With its pristine high-altitude lake and towering mountains as its backdrop, Chandertal—also called the Moon Lake—makes for a peaceful and beautiful camping destination. The area is a must-add to your Spiti Valley bike trip itinerary.

Returning from Chandertal, the last section of the Spiti Valley bike trip takes you via the famous Atul Tunnel and over rough terrain to Manali. This descent offers one more chance to take in the breathtaking Himalayan scenery before arriving at the lively town of Manali. Take an overnight Volvo bus to return to Delhi after an unforgettable vacation, thinking about all the wonderful things you did and all the beautiful sights you saw on your Spiti Valley bike trip itinerary.
