Spanning an area of 220 sq. kilometres, the Umiam Lake is surrounded by expansive meadows and gently sloped hills which are covered in lush green vegetation. The Assam State Electricity Board constructed a dam on the Umiam River which is how the Umiam Lake was created in the early 1960s. However, according to mythology two sisters from heaven decided to visit Meghalaya but one of the sisters lost their way while travelling, leaving the other sister devastated. When she arrived in Meghalaya, her tears wouldn’t stop streaming and thus the lake came into existence. In the local language ‘Khasi’, Umiam means ‘water of tears’.

The Umiam Lake's exquisite and panoramic scenes have led to its comparisons to Scotland's beautiful lakes. There is a magnificent park near the shores of the lake named Lum Nehru Park, which is a must-see for all bird enthusiasts. In addition to being an attractive picnic spot, the park is also famous for its orchid house, aviary, and expansive lawns. It is dotted with enormous pine trees on both sides, providing plenty of space for children to play.

The best time to visit Umiam Lake is between the months of March and June as the weather is pleasant.
