Built with the entrance of the Portuguese in 1500 CE, this cathedral is about 500 years old and is renowned for its historical paintings, murals, frescoes, and astonishing Indo-European and Gothic architecture. The current edifice of the church was consecrated in 1905 after it had undergone many renovations. Include this in your schedule if you like to see the old churches in Kerala.

St. Thomas, who sailed from Kodungallur in 52 CE to preach the gospel throughout the Malabar Coast of India, had strong ties to this ancient church in the little village of Malyatoor in the Eranakulam District, close to the port town of Kochi. You can accompany the multitudes of worshippers to Kurusumudi Mountain to pay your respects at the Marthoma Mandapam, which houses the saint's footprints and knees in a glass case and a pedestal upon which rests the Golden Cross. Also, while you're in the area, stop by the Spring of Miracles, which is reputed to have healing powers because the saint supposedly prayed here while quenching his thirst. People bring the therapeutic spring water home with them. The best time to travel? Plan your trip around April to attend the Kurisumudy (Puthunjayar) Feast which is held on the first Sunday following Easter.

One of the oldest churches in Kerala, it is situated near the intersection of National Highways 47 and 17, about 10 kilometres from Kochi. The Edapally Church is another name for St. George's Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church, which is the official name. St. Thomas was instrumental in converting the native population to Christianity. One of Kerala's most important healing churches, it dates back to 593 CE. The power of the saint to intervene on behalf of devotees before God's throne is greatly believed by them. He has been credited with several miracles. The town holds a procession with the figure of St. George on May Day. Pope John Paul II visited Kerala and placed the foundation stone during his tour.

Many historians rank this church among the oldest in India and Kerala. The church's Gothic structure, adorned with a Bible tower, is a work of art made of white marble. The interiors are just as impressive, and the prayer hall is sure to shock you. In fact this is among the tallest churches in Kerala, and in India. Devotees go to the church, despite its location in the middle of busy Thrissur, for the serenity and tranquility it offers.
