Even though we may still be obsessed with Barbiecore pink, Pantone's 2023 protagonist, Viva Magenta is bolder than its predecessor yet not as loud as the trendy pinks. In fact, that's what makes this shade so electrifying and unconformable, just like you would wish your makeup could be.
While this shade has been popular for quite some time now through risque lipsticks, metallic eyeshadows, and blushes, you can incorporate it into your look in more than just one way. There's something for everybody here, whether you're looking for something more subdued or OTT.
It's time to brace yourselves and wear the Pantone Colour of 2023 in creative ways with these makeup ideas:
The eyes, chico
Don’t be overwhelmed by this vibrant shade; magenta is a gorgeous colour to wear on your eyes and super versatile too. And Viva Magenta strikes a balance between warm and cool tones which complements all skin tones.
Coloured and patterned eyeliners are becoming popular with many makeup enthusiasts. “Even if you decide to go with a basic nude eye makeup, just add a magenta eyeliner and further enhance the look by adding the same liner on the lower lash line,” says Sarah Khan, makeup artist. The vibrancy of Viva Magenta will immediately draw attention to your eyes. Another way to do that is to play with a mix of magenta and black kohls. “Simply add Viva Magenta on the entire lid and then smoke out the outer corners of the eye with matte black eyeshadow. Further, smoke out the lash line using a black kohl pencil,” suggests Anjani Ranubhoj, a beauty content creator.
The shade can be used for great monochromatic makeup or even better for a graphic eyeshadow look. “Your regular smoky eyes can be great but then they would be just ‘regular’. For more edge, play around with a pop of Viva Magenta using a creamy matte liquid liner across your lids. If you want to keep it subtle, let the colour be only on the inner corners of your eyes for a washed look. Add to the theatrics by applying magenta glitter across the eyes to accentuate the area for an ultra-glam look,” guides Kerali Vaghasia, Head of Makeup at Kult App, a beauty and lifestyle m-commerce app.
However, if you’re feeling dramatic enough, you can complement your lids with some embellishments. “To give an edge to your look, you can use it as a graphic liner with some rhinestones,” suggests Diksha Sachdev, a beauty content creator.
Chandni Goyal, head of training, international brands, House of Beauty, recommends another way to make a bold eye statement with this colour. “Use a micro glitter in the magenta shade on the inner corner of the eyes. This can give your eyes an immediate ‘opened-up’ effect and make your eyes look bigger. Or use it on the crease of your upper eyelids for an edgy look. One can experiment to have a softly blended crease or a more edgy and geometric crease with the colour to make a statement.”
The mascara deserves some credit too. Just a slight lash lift with a shade like magenta is enough to take your look a few notches higher. “Another way of incorporating this colour into your look and being a trendsetter is to use a voluminising magenta mascara. In case you don’t have mascara in Viva Magenta, you can use an eyelash primer first, follow it up with a dust of magenta eyeshadow on the lashes and set it in place with a coat of clear mascara,” suggests Goyal.
Talk with your lips
Life is too short to keep your look simple. So every now and then, just go ahead and indulge in a dark and bold lip shade. “If you want to go for a soft look, you may wear it just as a wash of colour or top it with a magenta lip gloss for a dewy look. For dramatic tones of magenta, go light on the inner lip blending out to a darker outline. Dab your fingers to get the perfect smudged and soft effect,” advises Vaghasia. Just remember, if you opt for magenta lips, go minimal with your eye makeup.
Although the colour is not at all new to the pout, how you wear it can make all the difference. “You can even create freckles with this colour. Keep the skin bare minimum and hydrated with two coats of mascara and a lip tint in the same shade. This look is a lot of fun, powerful yet beautiful. Very spring relevant, this look can make you look like a trendy glam diva,” suggests Goyal.
Keep calm and blush
There’s no denying that a magenta-toned blush is capable of doing the trick that your regular pink blush would do. “It’s not hard to get a super natural finish with even the brightest of colours. It all depends on how you apply. Take a medium fluffy brush which will help to disperse the product evenly and go super light when you apply. It’s always easier to start with a little and build on the blush gradually to get your desired look,” tells Vaghasia.
You can substitute your pink blush for a deeper red blush instead if you don't have a magenta blush. Alternatively, you can drape it across your cheekbones and onto your lids for a more dramatic look.
