To new beginnings!"</p><p>Adding a hint of sparkle to her minimalistic bridal trousseau, Mehta wore an ivory outfit with an embellished blouse. She further embellished her wardrobe with a set of polki jewellery, necklaces, maang tika, and earrings. <p>Instagram might have inspired many of us to buy a lehenga for the next wedding that we plan to attend, but the OG wedding style across communities in India has always veered towards sarees. But you don’t need to worry about looking dated in a saree as designers have been offering several fresh takes on saree styling this season. </p><p>“When styled well with the right jewellery and hair, you can hardly go wrong with a saree, it works for a wedding and looks sexy too,” says celebrity stylist Reann Moradian. A simple way to go right with a saree this season is to keep it easy-breezy, be it with the choice of fabric, the colour palette, or your blouse style. “I love wearing and recommend pre-stitched sarees as they give you the ease to dance and mingle around without having to worry about the pleats coming undone. Falguni and Shane Peacock and Arpita Mehta do great stitched sarees and the colour palette is perfect for the season,” she adds.</p><h2>Let your accessories do the talking</h2><p>A saree works for all body types and there are enough fabric options for you to decide what falls best on your body and accentuates your curves. What really makes or breaks a saree look is how you accessorise it. If you are a bride, it’s okay to go all out with a heavy maangtika, neckpiece and earrings to match a traditional silk brocade saree. Whereas, if you are attending a wedding, pair your classic Banarasi or Kanjeevaram with fresh flowers in the hair (perfect for a good profile shot), and if you are wearing a heavy neckpiece, wear tops for earrings, and if you have big earrings and wish to keep your neck empty, a dainty matching maangtika can complete the look, don’t do it altogether to compete with the bride! “Remember to pace your jewellery with sarees. You can tie your hair up in different kinds of buns based on your saree and blouse. Or you can even keep your hair sleek and straight, which will still allow you to show off your jewellery,” says Moradian. A potli with dangling bugle beads or faux gems is another celebrity favourite at the moment. You can also wear a long-sleeved blouse with a deep neckline. The neckline of the blouse can be wide, deep or high depending on the look you are going for and how heavy or light your saree is and what you want to highlight in your look,” says Moradian. Statement blouses with cutouts or voluminous sleeves are quite popular at the moment, but when in doubt, you can never go wrong with a simple, classic cut. You can drape your saree in different ways too. The pallu can come in front when you want to show it off, or you could have the pallu over the shoulder draped loosely with a belt on your waist. Pick a plain belt or a beaded belt based on the occasion. </p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CW-ttYqNecL/"></oembed></figure><p>A belt can instantly add some detail to a single-colour look. You can choose to go with a tiny blouse or a full-sleeved one based on the occasion.</p><h2>Pop it with colours</h2><p>“With so many mini trends at the moment, now is the time to wear whatever you feel like. You can wear soft pastels for a day wedding or even do bright colour contrasts (think purple brocade sari with a green blouse, or a green sari with a fuschia blouse),” says Moradian. You can also do an intense solid coloured look with a plain saree, which never fails to make an impact. <p>Veteran designer Ashish N Soni, who is known to break away from stereotypical norms, recently celebrated his eponymous label's 30th anniversary. To a large extent, even after 30 years, he has been able to inject newness into classic silhouettes without making them look gimmicky or unwearable.</p><p>From the beginning of his brand’s launch, Soni has focused his design language on creating something subdued, yet bold enough that holds your attention - ensembles you can transition through the day and night. But as a designer who specialises in versatile wearables, how does he let his designs follow their own paths when collaborating with a high-street Indian clothing brand?</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-n-soni_Pic_1660215317328.jpg"><figcaption>Designer Ashish N Soni</figcaption></figure><p>The designer’s latest endeavour is a collaboration with the fashion retail brand Indya, through a fall-festive edit, which launched on August 10. Doing what the designer does best, the capsule collection is all about stylish separates with razor-sharp tailoring. Stating that fashion collaborations are essentially important while bringing together two different brands and their best offerings, he said, “there are so many factors that come into play when you're doing a collaborative line. Not to mention that you have to keep the spirit and signature of both the brands at play. They, sort of, allow both the parties to enhance and bring a new spin to both the designers' language.”</p><p>Setting the tone for the season of festivities and taking his edgy aesthetics to occasion wear, the collaboration is a documentation of keeping up with the changing times of glamorous contemporary outfits with exceptional detailing.</p><h2>Inside Ashish N Soni X Indya</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-Soni-x-Indya-%288%29_1660215415083.jpg"></figure><p>Adding new-age styles to Indian wear that we wouldn't typically see is one of the goals for both the brands. A hallmark of Indya is that it offers affordable ethnic fusion wear while maintaining the panache that one would find in designer clothes. However, this collection carries Soni’s minimal yet bold design language, giving the brand a much-needed update for a look-book with a modern understated vibe. </p><p>The glam closet include brazen pantsuits, sleek pre-pleated sarees, belted jumpsuits with attached drapes, capes, billowing skirts and a host of other genre-bending styles. “I wanted to keep the collection in the whole evening-wear zone, especially given the fact that we are doing a mid-August launch, where we are heading right into the festive season. I also wanted to keep the overall mood board occasion-driven and ceremonial. The ensembles are ornate and not basic wear that you could easily intermix to wear for different occasions.” he explains as he takes us through the collection. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-Soni-x-Indya-%2820%29_1660215538021.jpg"></figure><p>Moreover, the colour palette is an eclectic mix of classic ivory and black, rich jewel tones and muted pastels. What caught our eye most was the exquisite brocade threads, tonal sequins and riveting surface prints in this Indya collection. Priced between Rs 1,200-4,200, it does serve as a good opportunity for fashion lovers to indulge in minimal yet stellar craftsmanship through festive fusion wearables. </p><p>“For collaborations like these, it takes more than just design. A lot of thought process goes behind ensuring that the final product that comes out is exciting for the consumer and that, they will find it new and worth investing in,” Soni explains. The options in this collection allow you to wear them on a trans-season basis. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-Soni-x-Indya-%2819%29_1660215468829.jpg"></figure><p>The collection speaks a global design language with ensembles in contemporary cuts and streamlined silhouettes with feminine details that can take one through festive soirees with utmost glam. </p><h2>Decoding today’s festive wardrobe aesthete</h2><p>“The pre-pleated saree looks are a favourite and they are a rage now. Whether it’s for day functions or eveningwear, they really transition well for all times,” the designer adds. A staple of Indya’s product line, there are a lot of pre-draped sarees in this collection as well that are quite interestingly styled with strappy blouses, giving a very modern edge and avatar to an otherwise regular saree look.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><p>Soni is aware that the modern Indian consumer is now looking for ensembles that are visually commanding, keeping this festive edit punctuated with riveting embroideries, techniques and prints - that most of the patrons are drawn towards. Adding about his special piece from the collection, he tells, “The brocade pantsuit is my favourite and the suits are well-loved by people nowadays. It's something very signature from our archives, which we've translated into evening wear. Whether you wear the jacket with a saree or the trousers with your own shirt - it’s a multi-functional piece that looks elegant however styled."</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-Soni-x-Indya_1660215448083.jpg"></figure><p>On being asked how accessories can transform a look, he suggests wide belts can add the perfect touch of glam to both Indian and Western wear. “We have used a lot of wide belts in this collection and you would see them trending this season.  It’s that one accessory that's not dependent on one's height. And every time you style your look with a belt, it works because it condenses your waistline. No matter what your size, you look a size smaller while accessorising with belts,” he adds. “A lot of thought has gone into creating these looks for the collection, focusing on accessorising with belts in gold and silver.” </p><p>With a balanced mix of bold yet sophisticated brocade weaves, tonal sequins and dramatic foiling, the collection weaves the magic of understated exuberance. He further explains, “With designer wear, people perceive it to be a one-time wear. That was my biggest benchmark when I was designing this collection - that's not how I perceived it to be. Because if you were to invest in these pieces, you could wear them on multiple occasions in numerous ways.”</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>Reaching a newer audience</h2><p>Soni also added how this collaborative collection would help in increasing his customer base, “Because of a higher price point, as a designer, I wasn’t able to reach a bigger audience. Indya comes with a wider reach across so many pin codes and delivery across the world - it opens up our market, especially given that we don't do these price points in our main line.”  </p><p>The collaboration focused on creating a collection incorporating both brands' aesthetics, but the creation of an affordable designer line that appeals to the modern woman remained the highlight.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-Soni-x-Indya-%2835%29_1660215499552.jpg"></figure><p>“The biggest challenge while doing this collection was working with completely different kinds of budgets for fabrics and embellishments. In terms of choosing fabrics and all of that, we really had to work and develop, keeping the price points, in mind. And I think more or less, we managed to achieve that. We've used some interesting georgettes, muslins and seen how those fabrics feel at hand before processing with the final design. We went through all those steps prior to actually getting the final samples. And I realised that this setting is similar to what we would have done with a different fabric for a higher price point. This is a collection that I am happy to be associated with and put my name on,” Soni shares more. </p><p>When designers collaborate with high-street brands, they get access to new audiences, almost an ‘aspirational’ group - those who typically cannot afford luxury but aspire for the brands, the lifestyle and the looks. The key to any brand's success is remaining relevant to the target consumer and resonating with them at a time when their demands are amid a shift such as the pandemic. </p><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Ashish-Soni-x-Indya-%2823%29_1660215554756.jpg"></figure><p>“As a designer, I always look forward to working on projects that challenge me to step out of my comfort zone and this collaboration with Indya presented me with an opportunity to do just that. ‘We Want To Remove The Mental Block That Sarees Make You Immobile,’ Says Anavila 

<p>It’s been a glorious two decades since designers Shantnu and Nikhil Mehra launched their eponymous couture house. Although couture in India has been more or less about ornate lehengas and classical sarees—all meticulously crafted for the big fat Indian wedding—the designer duo took the Indian fashion scene by storm and changed this pre-conceived notion. </p><p>The classic Shantnu & Nikhil ensemble stands out for its unapologetic glamour.  Structured silhouettes, cocktail gowns blurring the boundaries between ballgowns and lehengas, voluminous drapes meeting expertly constructed bodices shimmering with crystals, exquisite hand-embroideries, and leather appliqués lend a powerful look to women’s couture. That’s not to say that edgy menswear is missing from their portfolio. Draped kurtas, military-inspired bandhgalas, and sherwanis make the wearer revel in joy and confidence. “We continue to put constant effort to stay relevant and showcase brand resiliency. Being trend-centric is market-driven but being anti-trend, which is a deep-seated emotion for our brand, is about driving the market—and that’s our philosophy,” explains the meticulous designer-duo.</p><figure class="media"><oembed url="https://www.instagram.com/p/CYOm8x-B8TP/"></oembed></figure><p>With two couture stores in the capital already, the designers knew that if they opened a new one, it would be a complete reflection of the house that celebrates modernity with its style and silhouettes. So, recently when they unveiled their largest retail store in Delhi—it stood out as a homely space, like a walk-through of an artist's home capturing its sense of belonging, rather than a typical retail store. The duo explains, “The store has been constructed in a style that reflects the perfect sanctuary of an SN Muse who appreciates the brand and its beliefs. Each part of the store has been given special care, and the style and silhouettes glorify modernity.”</p><p>The new store dictates the classic aesthetes of the Shantnu & Nikhil brand with simple structures in black, white, and grey tones—as well as gold embellishments. Signature leather adorns the ceiling while each piece of furniture in the store includes a vintage brooch or laser-cut leather placemats. The store also features its signature laser-cut influence wall. “Our menswear rack has a plethora of styles ranging from a draped kurta and neo-sherwani to a decadent bandhgala. For our millennial women, we have neo-lehenga and cocktail gowns which are bound to set them apart from the crowd,” they reveal.<br>So, what does it take for a stellar house like this to be ‘anti-trend’ in India and carve out unique silhouettes only limited to them? We caught up with the designer-duo on what it takes to be championing edgy glamour in Indian silhouettes and sustaining 20 years remarkably. </p><h2>1. Why did you choose a physical store when the pandemic has seen online shopping as one of the biggest trends?</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Shantnu-Nikhil-Mehrauli-Store-2_1641190416470.jpg"></figure><p>Amidst the pandemic, we launched our bridge-to-luxury brand—SN by Shantnu & Nikhil, which was entirely digitally driven. The brand is an extension of our ethos which leverages itself into ready-to-wear ensembles. With a brand launch and now a physical store, we’ve experienced both worlds. </p><p>The approach to celebration wear and ceremonial wear have a very different look and feel to it—patrons invest much more in ceremonial wear, so for them, it’s necessary to wear and feel what they’re about to purchase. Couture takes more time and effort during its production process, so a patron must have a personal touch and accessibility to the brand.</p><h2>2. The new space sings the story of an artist returning home to his hometown, right in the heart of history, and bringing his friends to see his work. The goal of the store, which has a welcoming and warm ambiance, is to reflect the artist's best work and how gently it waits to be enjoyed and brought home by patrons who adore the brand. We want our patrons to feel this depth when they enter the space and don’t just see it as a regular retail experience. We want them to indulge truly in the luxurious experience we have in-store for them.</p><p>AlsoRead0</p><h2>3. You have mentioned the ‘anti-trend' wedding concept for this store. We want to stir memories of conventional methods and show how innovative a modern-day wedding can be. Millennial couples are steering away from the traditional silhouettes and are being more contemporary with their choices. The store offers eclectic choices to bold patrons who are unafraid to take an experimental choice for their big day.</p><h2>4. Why do you think wedding fashion is veering towards 'anti-trend'?</h2><p>In the post-pandemic landscape, design has become paramount. We as a brand have always been strong advocates of anti-trend couture, where the focus is on neo-shapes, silhouettes, minimalism—and of course, on the wearer. Weddings have become far more personal. Brides and grooms have had to curb a lot of their wedding dreams in light of the current situation. Thus, there is this natural urge to compensate for that through their ensembles, more now than ever. Be it the bride and groom or an attendee—they are all looking at timeless pieces with unique detailing and a sense of contemporary ease.</p><h2>5. What are some hybrid fashion staples that one should invest in for the wedding season?</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Shantnu-Nikhil-Mehrauli-Store-1_1641190436755.jpg"></figure><p>We’ve observed a lot more sentimental value in our patrons, with respect to their choices, of late due to the pandemic. Pastel tones, unconventional silhouettes, and signature S&N attributes like leather details and bold drapes have taken the centre stage in a calming mélange of anti-trend styles. This season patrons can revisit a lot of metallic embroideries, goth applique, and the classic zardozi all creating neo-luxe looks.</p><h2>6. Since you enjoy patrons from the millennial crowd, who can identify themselves as the ideal Shantnu & Nikhil client?</h2><p>An ideal Shantnu & Nikhil muse is fearless, unabashed, and ready to take up their cause. Shantnu & Nikhil as a brand respects people who treat their sartorial choices as a form of personal expression and are up for an experimental outlook on every occasion. Whilst our couture ensembles act as a conversation starter at a cocktail party, the bridge-to-luxury collection will empower millennials and Gen Z to take up their cause while maintaining patriotic fashion sensibility.</p><p>AlsoRead1</p><h2>7.  What are the key silhouettes and styles for the modern bride in order to look timeless?</h2><p>The wedding trousseau is such an emotional possession that brings up so many memories when you repurpose it. It should be filled with pieces that you can go back to and relive your memories in. Remember the importance of classics and pay close attention to the details. The classics you purchase today will become family heirlooms in the future.
