About Pav Bhaji

The origin of pav bhaji is not well documented, so it is difficult to say who exactly 'invented' the dish. However, it is believed to have originated in the 1850s in the city of Mumbai, India. As a quick and filling meal for textile mill workers during their lunch break. At the time, Mumbai was a major centre for textile production and mill workers were often too busy and exhausted to cook a full meal during their lunch break. As a solution, street vendors began to create a dish that was fast and easy to prepare, yet still filling and satisfying.
The key ingredient in pav bhaji is the bhaji, which is made by boiling and mashing a variety of vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, peas, and bell peppers. Spices such as turmeric, cumin, and coriander are added to the bhaji to give it a unique and delicious flavour. The bhaji is then served with soft pav, which is lightly toasted and buttered before serving.
One of the unique features of pav bhaji is its versatility. Many street vendors offer variations of the dish, such as cheese pav bhaji, paneer pav bhaji, and even chocolate pav bhaji. The dish is also a popular choice for vegetarians, as it is a tasty and filling meal that is high in nutrients.
Pav bhaji is often served with chopped onions, lemon wedges, and coriander leaves as garnishes, which adds an extra layer of flavour and texture to the dish. It is also typically served with a side of chopped onions, which are usually mixed with the bhaji before eating. This is a street food that is perfect for a quick snack or a satisfying meal and people who visit Mumbai should definitely try it.
