Handshake Speakeasy in the Colonia Juarez neighbourhood in Mexico City is no ordinary bar! It opened its basement bar in 2023. Secured an impressive third position in the World's 50 Best Bars list that same year. Fast forward to 2024, and it has only held its ground, it's risen to claim the coveted title of World's Best Bar.

Tucked behind an unamusing door marked with the silver number 13, this velvet-draped, Art Deco hideway reveals a world where it's not just about cocktails being served. When asked about the most distinctive feature of the bar, Javier Rodriguez, Head Bartender at Handshake mentions the vintage typewriter. “It's the showstopper,” he says. “It symbolises the blend of classic cocktail culture and storytelling at the bar. Just like each key on the typewriter, every drink has a unique story to tell.” And indeed, at Handshake, it's not just about what's in the glass, it's about the narrative that unfolds from the first handshake to the final sip.

Known for taking the faded glamour of Prohibition-era aesthetics and giving it a sharp, modern twist, Handshake is now bringing that magic to India with a two-day bar takeover at Slink & Bardot, Mumbai, offering locals the chance to experience their award-winning concoctions firsthand. Rodriguez believes, “It takes more than just cocktails, to be the World's No. 1. It's about creating an unforgettable experience, from a unique ambiance to a passionate team that constantly pushes the boundaries and keeps the bar scene fresh.” And he doesn't shy away from admitting how significant it is for a bar to be recognised by the World's 50 Best Bars. He says, “For us, it's incredibly meaningful. It highlights our dedication to innovation and craftsmanship. While every bar has its own goals, we am to be best and we are committed to staying at the top.”

Speakeasies are known for their secrecy, and Handshake is no exception. But how do they keep things fresh for returning guests? Rodriguez explains, “We love keeping things fresh by regularly updating our menu and adding seasonal specials. This way, there's always something unexpected waiting for our guests.”

While this may not be Handshake's first time in India, it certainly is for Rodriguez. “It's my first time in India and I can't wait to explore its flavours and ingredients,” he says. “It's going to be a source of inspiration for our collaborative cocktails.” As a bar rooted in the heart of Mexico city, their cocktail menu is deeply influenced by local traditions and flavours. “Local flavours are the heart of our menu. From mezcal to tropical fruits, we celebrate the city in every glass.”

Together with Dany Jardon Ruiz, the Laboratory Manager at Handshake, he will craft four signature cocktails at the takeover - the Coconut Oil Mexi-Thai, Olive Oil Gimlet, Orange Blossom, and the Jasmine Tea coktail. However, when asked about his most favourite cocktail on the menu, he says, “The Oaxaca Old Fashioned is my go-to. A smoky twist on a classic, inspired by Mexico's heritage and crafted with mezcal. It's like a taste of home in a glass.” Particularly fond of experimenting with smoked ingredients, he shares, “They are my playground. They add depth and a sense of mystery, transforming a drink into a layered experience.”

Back in Mexico, the entire staff greets each guest with a heartfelt bienvenido - a simple yet meaningful way to ensure everyone is welcomed. But if there were one song that plays every time someone walks in and could sum up the spirit of the bar, it would be Nina Simone's Feeling Good. As Rodriguez puts it, “It captures that uplifting, timeless vibe we strive for - a song that feels like a deep, satisfied breath.”
