With a light golden crust, and crispiness on the outside, while being tender and rubbery on the inside, crispy fried calamari are an absolute delight to have. Calamari is basically the Italian term used for squid, and it is now largely available in grocery stores and is quite a popular item that is bought throughout the world. Fried squid is generally prepared from ring calamari, which is seasoned and deep-fried. Calamari dish recipe is a great option for a simple and quick appetiser when you have guests coming, or even when you are craving a quick but delectable bite to have.   1. 500 grams ring calamari and tentacles
  2. 1 and ½ cup all-purpose flour
  3. 1 cup buttermilk
  4. ¼ tsp garlic powder
  5. ¼ tsp pepper
  6. 2 tsp freshly chopped parsley
  7. ½ tsp paprika
  8. 2 tsp salt
  9. Vegetable oil

  1. In a bowl add the calamari along with buttermilk and combine together.
  2. Cover the bowl with the calamari and buttermilk mixture and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. 
  3. Add the flour, paprika, salt, pepper and garlic powder in a bowl and mix well. 
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan on a high flame. 
  5. Remove each piece of the ring calamari from the buttermilk and dip it in the flour mixture. Repeat the process until all the squid pieces are coated. 
  6. Add 8-10 pieces of the ring calamari to the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes until they turn golden brown. 
  7. Once cooked, remove the squid pieces from the oil and drain the excess oil on paper towels. Repeat the process for the remaining pieces of the ring calamari. 
  8. Sprinkle salt and chopped parsley over the fried squid and serve hot.

Pro tip: If you want a crunchier version of the fried squid, add ¼ cup of cornmeal or seasoned breadcrumbs in the flour mixture to coat the calamari dish recipe.

1. Can the calamari squid recipe be stored for later consumption?
Fried squid tastes best when served immediately after cooking, however, you can store and reheat the crispy fried calamari in the oven. There is a chance of the fried squid turning rubbery when stored for a longer time.

2. Can squid bodies be used in the calamari squid recipe instead of ring calamari?
You can use squid bodies in the recipe, but make sure to cut them similar to ring calamari sizes in order for the calamari recipe to be cooked in a similar process and time.
