Snapshots
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival debuted in 1999 with a roster that included alternative rock greats Morrissey, Rage Against the Machine, and Beck. It has become a phenomenon in popular culture and has grown exponentially since then. The many art installations, fashion shows, celebrity sightings, and varied musical performances at Coachella have contributed to the festival's current notoriety. Before we unveil the juicy details about Coachella 2025- let’s understand the history of Coachella from start to finish, including everything from its cultural and musical influences to its potential future.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival - A musical history through the ages
On October 9th and 10th, 1999, the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, played host to the inaugural Coachella event. Paul Tollett, who also started the music promotion business Goldenvoice, was in charge of planning it. The festival's popularity led its organisers to decide to hold it every year instead of only once. The place where the event is hosted, "Coachella Valley," is the inspiration for the festival's name.
Alternative rock and indie bands dominated Coachella's early roster. The festival's original spirit, artistic expression, and feeling of community drew a youthful and alternative audience. An integral part of Coachella's character was the art installations that were a part of the festival. Video projections and LED lights were commonplace components of the interactive art pieces.
Coachella - the most famous music festival in the world
The roster at Coachella expanded in tandem with the festival's rising prestige. Expanding to two days in 2001, the festival welcomed its first hip-hop performer, Jurassic 5, in 2002. People came from all over the globe to attend Coachella by 2003, making it a true destination event. The festival's setting in the Southern California desert contributed to its appeal by creating an environment unlike any other. Coachella reached a watershed moment in 2004 when it welcomed Radiohead as its first headline artist. Coachella was starting to make its mark on the music festival industry with the headliner (psst 2025 is going to be every pop lover’s dream!)
The Cure, Prince, Paul McCartney, and Beyoncé were among the other famous headliners that appeared throughout the years. More mainstream performers, such as pop and EDM musicians, were added to the festival's programme as it continued to grow.
Coachella - A masterclass in curating lineups
The schedule at Coachella has grown to feature artists from many different musical traditions throughout the years. Nowadays, the event showcases rock, hip-hop, indie, electronic dance music (EDM), pop, and even country music. The event has gained popularity because of its varied roster, which appeals to a wide range of people. As the music industry has evolved, Coachella has been a positive indicator of the changing face of music by including emerging performers who have subsequently become household stars.
In 2010, electronic dance music (EDM) became a staple at Coachella, altering the roster in a major way. At the festival, there was a special dance tent that became a hotspot for festivalgoers. As electronic dance music (EDM) continues to rise in popularity, the festival created the Sahara Tent in 2012 to showcase EDM performances exclusively. Ever since, the Sahara Tent has grown in popularity, drawing in some of the genre's most prominent figures.
