This Viral Skin Cycling Routine Might Be The Only Skincare You Need

Skin cycling is the viral skincare trend taking over. Learn what it is, its benefits and how to build the perfect routine for your skin.

Although it's easy to ignore most social media-born skin care fads, skin cycling is one regimen that deserves your attention. The method's smart use of maximum active, modern skin care chemicals, while enabling the moisture barrier to provide essential defenses caused it to gain popularity on social media. But what is skin cycling, and how can one develop a personal rhythm?

Skin cycling method- how does it work

When it comes to nightly skin care, the idea of skin cycling is to use active ingredients on specific days and then have "rest" days. The standard protocol calls for two nights of active ingredient use, two nights of rest, and then repeats the process for four days.

Skin cycling routine—what to do

Before bed, exfoliate

To begin, exfoliation is the primary emphasis of the first night's cycle. To improve skin texture and address congestion, exfoliants remove dead skin cells and encourage skin cell turnover. Unfortunately, the skin's protective barrier and natural equilibrium can be upset by excessive exfoliation. Skin redness, irritation, breakouts, or flakiness may occur in certain individuals. Over time, exfoliating too often can cause skin to become sensitive, dry, and show signs of ageing too soon. By separating exfoliants from other treatments, which can cause over-exfoliation and irritation when used together, skin cycling helps you prevent these issues. It's worth noting that exfoliating your skin regularly (with the correct product) can also accelerate the process and have tremendous advantages for your skin. The purpose of skin cycling is to give your skin a chance to adapt to new treatments and exfoliants as you figure out what works best for it.

Retinoid on Night 2

When it comes to skincare, retinoids are among the most potent substances you can use. They aim to improve the look of skin issues caused by cell turnover and collagen loss. Retinoids are known to make skin tighter, which in turn reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin tone irregularities. Using retinoids and exfoliants on the same night could make your skin more sensitive because they both promote skin cell turnover. To reduce the likelihood of this, it is recommended to save retinoids for the second night of the cycle.

The third and fourth nights: Rest and Restoration

It is now time to moisturise the skin and take care of the skin barrier. Hyaluronic acid, ceramide, glycerin, and niacinamide are some of the substances that Bowe suggests using in a serum after cleansing and while the skin is still damp. Moisturise afterwards; pick a rich product that will fortify the skin's protective barrier. Use rosehip or squalane oil on the cheeks for really dry skin.

7-day skin cycling routine: essential products you need

Gather four different kinds of skincare products before you attempt skin cycling. Try to choose items that are not just hypoallergenic but also odourless and noncomedogenic. A consultation with a dermatologist may be in order if your skin is very sensitive, acne-prone, or hyperpigmented. With their help, you can choose the skin care products that work best for your unique complexion.

Start with the basics- try to find an alcohol-free, mild cleanser that won't scratch or damage delicate facial skin.

Next move to exfoliation. Chemical peeling agent containing alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids. Gentle exfoliants known as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) can soften and smooth skin, diminish the look of wrinkles and fine lines, and improve overall skin health. For skin that is prone to acne or has rough patches that require smoothing, beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) can be a helpful, gentle exfoliant. An exfoliating serum that delicately enhances skin clarity and texture is Mandelic Acid 10% + HA, for instance. The Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner by the Ordinary is another fantastic choice; it is a water-based exfoliator that improves brightness and diminishes textural imperfections.

The term "retinoid" is more commonly used to describe stronger prescription formulations, whereas "retinol" is more commonly used to describe over-the-counter medicines. For those who are new to using retinoids, products containing retinol, such as 0.2% Retinol in Squalane, provide a milder option. The addition of squalane, a skin-derived moisturising ingredient, lends support to this formulation by increasing surface-level moisture and reducing the dryness that can occur with retinol use. Go for a  Retinal Emulsion, which is the most potent retinoid formulation; it quickly tightens and smoothens skin while diminishing the look of dark spots; it is recommended for individuals with some experience with retinoid products.

Choose a hydrating moisturiser that is appropriate for your skin type. Moisturisers assist in restoring the skin's protective barrier by drawing moisture to the skin's outer layers. You can think of the last two nights of skin cycling as a form of skin self-care. At this point, skin can be protected from environmental aggressors and resupplied with the help of moisturizing and barrier-repairing treatments.

Serums that hydrate and protect, such as Hyaluronic Acid 2% and Soothing & Barrier Support Serum, can be useful to use while you sleep on recovery evenings. While calming pain and diminishing the appearance of redness, these formulas aid in repairing the skin barrier.

Sunscreen with a wide range of effective UV rays. For all-day skin protection, apply first thing in the morning. This is a must-have no matter what skincare regimen you use!
