Kaziranga National Park Reopens On October 1, Here's What To Know

Spot one-horned rhinos, and go on an elephant safari, or relax amidst stunning views at the Kaziranga National Park set to reopen after the monsoon break soon.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the only home to the Indian one-horned rhinos, Kaziranga National Park has opened its gates to the tourist for another season of safaris and visits. The national park that is situated in Assam is one of the most sought-after wildlife destinations in the country, and it is easy to see why. Formed in 1908 on the recommendation of Mary Curzon, the park is located on the edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots – Golaghat and Nagaon district, has close to 2200 Indian rhinos, and is spread over 430 square kilometres.

Assam’s Environment and Forests minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary announced the reopening ceremony on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The reopening ceremony was held at the Western range of Kaziranga National Park in Bagori. Following the annual monsoon break, Kaziranga National Park’s opening date was announced as October 1, 2024. By this time, things have settled a but more, and the tourists can enjoy the flora and fauna of the Kaziranga National Park fully.

Apart from the Indian one-horned rhinos, other animals that you can find in the famed Kaziranga National Park happen to be elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Apart from them, Kaziranga National Park also saw a major growth in the tiger population in the region, which prompted the governing bodies to recognise it as a tiger reserve in 2006. It is also home to many bird populations like the white-fronted goose, ferruginous duck, and Baer’s pochard duck. Apart from these species, there are many migratory birds like black-necked stork, and Asian openbill stork that migrate from Central Asia each year, making the Kaziranga National Park a great hit even with bird watchers.

Apart from this, Kaziranga National Park recent news has also been about celeb spotting. Actress Nimrat Kaur took to her social media to post about her trip to the national park and was seen gushing over the surreal views, and adorable wildlife alike. The actress especially loved and posted pictures of a smooth-coated otter. Winter (November to February) is the best time to visit the Kaziranga National Park as the climate is mild and dry. The chances of spotting rhinos are higher in winter as the grass burns off and the background becomes clearer. But this is not all. You can also visit the Kaziranga National Park in the summer season. During this time of the year, the climate remains dry and windy, and one can find animals around the water bodies.

Note: You should report half an hour before at the safari point.

The national park experiences a tropical climate majority of the months, so keep it light but if you’re headed there in the winter and will be enjoying the Kaziranga National Park safaris, do pack some layers. Apart from this, pack mosquito repellents, and hats, and sun protection.
