There are plenty of geothermal spas in Iceland, like Sky Lagoon, Iceland but the Blue Lagoon is the most famous one. Let's step back in time to get to know the history of Blue Lagoon Island, Iceland. It was 1976 when the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant began operations. The plant generated electricity by using super-hot water that was pulled up from underground. The mineral-rich water was released into the surrounding lava fields, which ultimately accumulated in a natural depression.

Valur Margeirsson was the first person to bathe in the milky-blue waters in 1982. Folks thought he'd lost his marbles, chilling in the blue muck, but with time, they realised the amazing healing properties of water owing to silica and sulphur. The earliest swimming provisions at the Blue Lagoon officially opened in 1987, and the first human-made bathing area opened in 1992.
