According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that during the exile of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Lakshmana, Lord Rama was on an onerous task to search for water on this rough terrain to apply tilak to his forehead. But after a long search, he thought to create a source of water over here and shot an arrow to the boulder. This is how the spring was created.
This water of the spring is considered sacred and don't forget to take a sip if you visit Namada Chilume. You can't directly drink the water from the main spring as it has been guarded by railing around it.
