Son of renowned director David Dhawan, he was born on April 24, 1987, in Mumbai, India. He earned his degree in Business Management from Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom, before moving back to Bombay and taking up acting.

Post being an assistant on My Name Is Khan, Varun made his debut in the Karan Johar directorial, Student of the Year in 2012. Varun's performance in the movie garnered him a massive fan following. Varun Dhawan portrays Raghav, a man seeking vengeance for the death of his family, in the crime thriller Badlapur. His character was dark and brooding, and his outfit in the movie differed from his typically clean-cut appearance. He grew a beard and adopted a grunge aesthetic, dressing in leather jackets, worn-in denims, and boots.
