When it comes to Sonam Kapoor, the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival makes a fine platform to show off her sartorial prowess. It has been a decade since she has donned everything - from classic ball gowns to traditional sarees at the French Riviera event. Although the actor would be giving this year’s event a miss, here’s a look back at the times when she ruled the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival.
The big debut look
Sonam Kapoor debuted at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2011. She chose a dramatic couture gown by Jean Paul Gaultier and her hair was tucked into a bun. For a debut look, it definitely made heads turn and take notice of an emerging fashionista then.
In dreamy tulle
Her second year at Cannes saw the actor donning an intricate, tulle dress by Alexander McQueen. The sheer dress made her look nothing less than a diva.
Going traditional
At the 2013-Cannes, Sonam Kapoor decided to go all traditional by opting for an Anamika Khanna saree styled with an embroidered jacket. She really pulled off that pearl nathni pretty well.
For the following year too, she gave the saree a beautiful makeover by making a perfect balance between traditional and western aesthete. In a powder-pink, sheer saree by designer Anamika Khanna, she was a beautiful sight with subtle makeup and sleek straight open hair.
Old Hollywood glam
In 2014, she took the classical Hollywood glam look to a higher notch with her black, voluminous Elie Saab gown and flapper-girl inspired hairstyle. Her perfectly done red lips complemented her confidence.
Fine feathers
2015 marked Kapoor’s 5th consecutive year at the Cannes Film Festival. She incorporated full fluff into her red carpet look, going for a light yellow feathered Elie Saab couture gown. With pink lipstick and long pearl-drop earrings, she looked right out of a fairytale.
Sheer elegance
Sonam's 2016-Cannes red carpet appearance is definitely one of her highlights. White seemed to be the go-to colour for the actor. The first red-carpet look saw Kapoor look ravishing in a silky peach-coloured dress by Ralph and Russo that came with a beautiful, floral-embroidered cape. The floral netted long cape added a very delicate touch to the ensemble.
For the same year, Sonam chose another Ralph & Russo ensemble. This time, it was a saree-inspired dress in pristine white that came with two elegant trails. Her minimal makeup and just sleek-straight hair balanced the elegance of the look.
Golden glamour
Sonam channelled her own golden gilded glamour way back in the 2017 Cannes. She chose a glittering golden Elie Saab dress and paired it with a golden clutch, looking like a true diva.
Like a boss
Sonam Kapoor’s red carpet choice for Cannes 2019 gave her an aura of elegant sophistication. She created boss-lady magic when she opted for a tuxedo dress in ivory tones by designer Ralph & Russo. The tuxedo came with a dramatic overskirt, adding a dress-like feel to it.
