About the Strawberry Daiquiri Cocktail Recipe
The Daiquiri cocktail is related to the 19th-century Cuban blend of aguardiente de cana, lime, honey and water. However, the creation of the drink is credited to an American engineer called Jennings Stockton Cox.
After President Roosevelt’s victory at the Battle of San Juan Hill, the Americans started taking advantage of the iron ore mines. Stockton Cox led them to the initial expeditions where they began exploring. Cox and his team worked on the small town of Daiquiri, on the south-eastern shore of Cuba in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. This is where the classic cocktail gets its name from.
The engineers received decent salaries, along with a handsome tobacco ration. However, as qualified engineers, they required better incentives. As a result, Cox requested a monthly ration of the local rum, which was the Bacardi Carta Blanca. He noticed that the Cubans combined water, soda and their evening coffee with the Bacardi and began experimenting himself. It is said that Cox met with another engineer named Francesco Domenico Pagliuchi, and during their meeting, they set about creating a drink from the available ingredients, which were rum, limes and sugar. He had then kept a record of the recipe.
Hemingway Daiquiri
The traditional Daiquiri is no doubt the classic, but the Hemingway Daiquiri calls for a story. Hemingway loved a good Daiquiri, he, however, ordered a special recipe for the Daiquiri when he was in Cuba. This variation of the Daiquiri was created specifically based on his request. Instead of adding sugar, as per the conventional recipe of Daiquiri, Hemingway’s recipe forgoes it and makes itself unique with the addition of grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur.
