South Indian cuisine is one that is a vast and rhythmic landscape stretching far beyond the humble idli. It is a masterclass in unlimiting the potential of a single ingredient, where the coconut can be a creamy base, a toasted garnish, or a fiery chutney, and where the tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves is treated with the precision of a science.
The Zee Zest Unlimit Awards 2026 celebrate the guardians of regional authenticity under the category for the “Best South India Restaurant”, where these restaurants from India stand out for their ability to bring the soul of the Peninsular coast and the heart of the Deccan Plateau to your plate.
1. The Konkan Cafe, Mumbai
Designed to resemble a traditional Nallukettu bungalow, The Konkan Cafe is a sentimental journey down the west coast. It captures the essence of the coastal life, which extends from the backwaters of Kerala to the shores of Goa and Maharashtra. The legendary thali experience here is what stands out, where the fish is caught fresh, and the appams are swirled to perfection right before your eyes.
2. Dakshin at ITC Grand Central, Mumbai
Dakshin is not just a restaurant; it is a research project in edible form. For decades, it has curated rare recipes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, presenting them with the regal hospitality that ITC is famous for. The Veinchina Mamsam and the Urulai Roast are some of the favourites from their menu. The Iyer’s Trolley, which features hand-made mini adais, kunni paniyaaram, and banana dosas have attained a cult status.
3. Benne, Mumbai
Benne is the new kid on the block who has taken Bandra by storm. It is a love letter to the legendary tiffin rooms of Bengaluru. This place proves that street-style souls can live comfortably in a chic and modern setting as well. Their focus is on the Davanagere Benne Dosa, which is crispy, buttery, and served with a spicy potato palya and coconut chutney that transports you straight to Karnataka. They are known for their Benne Masala Dosa and their signature Filter Coffee, which is arguably the frothiest in the city.
4. Carnatic Cafe, Gurugram
Bringing the authentic flavours of Karnataka to the national capital region, Carnatic Cafe has redefined South Indian dining in the North. It is a space where the crunch of a dosa meets the warmth of a home-style kitchen. They are known for their unique variety of dosas, like the Malleswaram 18th Cross, which features a thick, podi-coated crust which is soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The Bombat Dosa and the Manina Magga ice cream are among the other popular dishes here.
5. OOTA, Bengaluru
Located atop a microbrewery, OOTA is a deep dive into the diverse culinary micro-regions of Karnataka. From the fiery dishes of Saundatti to the subtle flavours of the Gowda community, it is a curated map of the state. Their dishes are created after extensive research, as chefs have travelled thousands of kilometres across the state of Karnataka to source authentic family recipes.
6. Restaurant Chef Pillai, Bengaluru
Founded by the charismatic Chef Suresh Pillai, this restaurant is a celebration of Kerala cuisine with a contemporary and global touch. It blends the rustic flavours of the boatmen with the refinement of a master chef. The Nirvana Fish, which is their signature creation, is one where a whole fish is pan-fried and then poached in coconut milk inside a banana leaf.
