When it comes to the art of precision, few cuisines command as much reverence as Japanese. From the delicate slice of a sashimi knife to the soul warming depth of a 48-hour ramen broth, Japanese dining in India has evolved from a niche luxury to a vibrant, multifaceted landscape.

As a part of the Zee Zest Unlimit Awards 2026, we are celebrating the establishments that honor Japanese culinary traditions while pushing boundaries of innovation. These Indian restaurants nominated in the category for “Best Japanese Restaurants” don't just serve food, but they offer a masterclass in seasonal ingredients, impeccable presentation, and the philosophy of Omotenashi or wholehearted hospitality.

What started as a cult favourite pop-up has transformed into one India’s most exclusive dining tickets. Nestled in a cosy 250 sq ft space in Bengaluru, Naru Noodle Bar is chef Kavan Kuttappa’s love letter to authentic ramen. Known for its intimate counter seating and a reservation system that fills up in seconds, Naru focuses on the slurp-and-go culture of Japan. Standout dishes like the Tokyo-style Shoyu Ramen and the creamy Tonkotsu are crafted with hand rolled noodles and broths that boast incredible depth. It is a testament to how big flavours can come from the smallest of kitchens!

A daring departure from the predictable, Mizu Izakaya brings the playful spirit of a Japanese gastropub to life. Under the guidance of Chef Lakhan Jethani, Mizu moves beyond basic sushi rolls to introduce diners to complex techniques and rare ingredients that are sourced directly from Japan. Whether it is their Mentaiko Grilled Scallops or the delicate Chawanmushi, every dish is a balance of traditional Washoku principles and modern flair. With its vibrant Goa outpost now making the waves, Mizu Izakaya remains a powerhouse of innovation in the Japanese dining scene.

Located within the lush confines of The Oberoi, Wabi Sabi is where luxury meets the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection. The restaurant’s design features a stunning 24-carat gold leaf wall and kintsugi-inspired crockery that sets the stage for an avant-garde culinary journey. Curated by Chef Randy Cultivo, the menu features signature hits like the Crunch Bag Sushi and Ruby and Gold Pillows. It is a space where the soft murmur of an outdoor waterfall meets the sizzle of a live sushi counter, offering a Zen-like escape in the heart of the city.

A hidden gem in Anjuna, JSan, which has been named after the founder, Chef Vishesh Jawarani, is a Japanese gastropub that celebrates the beauty of the soul. Passing through its iconic red Torii gates, guests are transported to a serene sanctuary that specialises in slow cooked ramen and Izakaya classics. Their 48-hour Yobimodoshi-inspired broth and 8-hour pork belly have earned them a loyal following. By blending Japanese craftsmanship with Goa’s susegad ethos, JSan offers a dining experience that is as much about warmth and community as it is about culinary precision.

The newest rebel in the block, Gaijin in Bandra, has quickly become a magnet for the city’s culinary elite. The name, which means ‘outsider’, reflects the approach of this restaurant, a playful and fun dining space that takes on Japanese cuisine in a way that dares to break the rules. From their Cherry wood-smoked Himalayan trout to the cult favourite Lamb Ribs, the menu is a high-energy collision of Tokyo and Mumbai. With an interior that is anchored by a massive seven-tonne stone centrepiece and an inventive cocktail program, Gaijin is redefining what a modern Japanese restaurant can be.
