For Tamil movie addicts, and more specifically for those who haven’t missed a single Suriya release till date, there’s big news.

The film star, who’s been stealing the screen since 1997 with some seriously iconic titles to his name, has begun shooting for his new film directed by Karthik Subbaraj. The yet-to-be-tiled film, which is currently being called ‘Suriya 44’ – this is the actor’s 44th film – also stars Pooja Hegde.

Suriya, who can pretty much transform into any character, will be seen in an old-school look in this film. From the short video that both Subbaraj and Suriya shared on X, he’s wearing a striped shirt in bright colours and wears a long mullet and a beard a la English comic book supervillain Dr Fu Manchu.

The filming began in the Andaman Islands and if the first look is a peek into the general tone of the film, it appears to be set in the past and won’t be without any fights and violence, and the Tamil star is no stranger to that.

In other news, Suriya will soon be seen in filmmaker Siva’s fantasy action film Kanguva. The film, which is currently scheduled to release around Diwali in 2024, will see the actor in a dual role.

Kanguva will also see the debut of Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in Tamil cinema. The film was originally announced in 2019, but was later shelved till in January 2022, Suriya announced that the film was going to be completed. Made on a budget of around INR 350 crore, Kanguva is one of the most expensive Indian films to date.

But that’s not all, Suriya will also be reviving his pending 2022-project Vaadivaasal with Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaaran, which we’re hoping will see the light of day in 2024.
