If you haven’t watched Vir Das in either his live shows or in a movie or on your Instagram timelines, then you’re clearly not clued into pop culture. Known for his on-point observational humour and satirical style of comedy, the entertainer is a popular face in both Indian and international circuits. With live shows across the globe, Vir is immensely versatile and almost always has a packed audience awaiting him.
So, when the official announcement came in on September 12, that the comedian cum actor cum musician will be the new host of the International Emmy Awards, it may have come as a surprise to the audiences, but it certainly didn’t shock anyone. For the lack of better words, this was expected sooner or later. Certainly, this is a historic first and a huge achievement for India. And this just goes on to prove that Indian entertainers like Vir are finally cutting through borders and making an impact on global platforms. This recognition is both encouraging and motivational for others in the fields of entertainment and such.
The announcement was shared on news portals, and also by Vir on his official Instagram page. He shared the news along with the caption: “Thanks to your support, an Indian Emmy Host can't wait to host the @iemmys this year! Crazy. Thank you for having me. Tremendously honoured and excited!" (sic)
This announcement saw plenty of Indian and international celebrities flood his comments section with their congratulatory messages. Popular actor Hrithik Roshan said, “Wow. That’s amazing. Very well done." (sic)
Director, producer and writer Zoya Akhtar wrote, "Of course you are." (sic)
Actor Kriti Sanon said, “That’s so amazing!!" (sic)
Fashion stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania wrote, "Unstoppable you!" (sic)
In an official statement, as mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter, Vir was quoted as saying, “I am so happy to be hosting the International Emmys. It's a massive prestigious night to uphold makers from across a world that I believe is making its best content. I know first-hand how it can be life-changing.” (sic)
Interestingly, this is not the actor’s first time at The Emmys. Just the previous year in 2023, Vir Das bagged an International Emmy Award for Comedy for Landing. This year, the Emmy’s will be held in New York City on November 25, 2024.
