The dating world today is fun, and chaotic, and with Gen Z in the mix, newer dating trends keep coming up each day. The latest addition to the current dating trends happens to be hoodfishing. A fun spin on phishing, where one hides their real identity for gains, hoodfishing is a trend on the dating apps where people lie about where they are from or where they are based out of. They are essentially phishing their potential dates about what hoods they hang out in.

Hoodfishing is one of the terms that got coined because of the dating trends in New York City, where people would phish their potential dates to believe they live in a hip and happening neighbourhood like the Upper East Side, Manhattan, or even Queens when in reality, they happen to be from neighbouring regions like New Jersey, or Long Island.
While it may seem harmless, hoodfishing is one of the more annoying dating trends that have taken off in the past some time because if you fall for it, it is extra work, making the distance work, but more importantly, it just isn’t ethical.

The proponents of hoodfishing argue that it has significantly increased their match rates, and has landed them so many good gates, given that dating trends in these happening neighbourhoods can be very different from the ones in the suburbs. The places to hangout at, the preferences, and even the general vibe of these neighbourhoods are very different, and with it being a success, hoodfishing, latest in the Gen Z dating trends is here to stay, and we’re curious what social discussions about dating trends it sparks.
