One of the biggest awards night in the year, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards were held in Los Angeles on Sunday. Often believed to be precursors of sorts to the Oscars, the Golden Globes winners list is something that filmmakers and cine-enthusiasts wait eagerly for. At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, a lot of big names that were expected to make a mark won, but so did a lot of unexpected winners. From all around the world, the best of the film talent was recognised and if you are also wondering who won at the Golden Globe awards this year, read on.
Best Motion Picture - Drama
For the Best Motion Picture award, the contenders were really strong this year, from Nickel Boys to Dune Part 2 to Conclave. But the film that stole the show at Golden Globes 2025 was The Brutalist. Starring Adrien Brody, this Best Motion Picture winner traces the journey of László Tóth, a Hungarian Jewish architect, who gets to the USA after surviving the holocaust, and grapples with the changes that make their way into his personal as well as professional life.
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
There was Challengers, and there was Wicked, and if you’ve seen the two, you’ll agree that it’s quite a range for the coveted Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. The winner for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards for this category was Emilia Pérez. This film also scored many other big awards this year, and rightfully so. Tracing the transformative journey of Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a powerful Mexican cartel leader who undergoes gender-affirming surgery to escape her criminal past, this Golden Globes Awards winner is one to watch out for, in the upcoming Academy Awards.
Best Motion Picture - Animated
This was honestly a bit expected to be one of the names on the award winners list. Many other nominees for the Best Motion Picture - Animated were much loved, like Inside Out 2, or Wild Robot, but Flow, which happens to be the winner of this prestigious award at the 82nd Golden Globes was a class apart. Highly emotive, this animation film, that said all it had to, without a single dialogue, was simply one of the best works to be awarded this year.
Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language
This is where India had high hopes. A collaborative production between India, France, Luxemburg, and the Netherlands, All We Imagine As Light made it this far in the awards race for the 2025 Golden Globes but lost to Emilia Pérez. The film director Payal Kapadia also couldn’t make the cut for the Best Director category, but quite a stellar performance for Indian films in general, and we can only hope that the next awards season, we can make up for it.
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
The comments section in the social media of the awards was full of people who wanted to know the fate of this award at the 2025 Golden Globes, and rightfully so. With her aching performance, Fernanda Torres, only the second woman ever to be nominated from Brazil, after her mother’s nomination 25 years ago, won for I’m Still Here.
The nominations included many other big names like Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Nicole Kidman, Pamela Anderson, and Kate Winslet.
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
For this award at the Golden Globes 2025, there was a range of performances. From Timothy Chalamet, to Daniel Craig, to Colman Domingo. Adrien Brody however took the trophy home for The Brutalist. It wasn’t his first nomination at the Golden Globes, as prior to this he has been nominated in 2003 for The Pianist.
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
For her performance in the provocative body horror comedy, The Substance, Demi Moore made it to the Golden Globes winners list. The actress who has been nominated thrice before, across different categories, for The Ghost and If These Walls Could Talk, finally won her big award at this year’s ceremony.
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Prior to this year, Sebastian Stan had been nominated once before, for Tommy and Pam. This year, while being nominated for two categories for two different movies, his performance in A Different Man earned the actor a place on the Golden Globes winners list.
Best Director - Motion Picture
While Emilia Pérez might have been on of the biggest names on the Golden Globes winners list, The Brutalist came a close second. Brady Corbet, the writer-director of the movie was nominated for both the categories and won big.
Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
While Brady won the Best Director for The Brutalist, Best Screenplay went to Peter Straughan for Conclave. The film that had many nominations at this year’s awards is a political thriller that delves into the clandestine process of electing a new pope following the sudden death of the incumbent.
