With double dose of nostalgia, Warner Brother Pictures and toy company, Mattel, have released the first look of Ryan Gosling as Ken, from the Barbie dolls franchise; and we can’t stop humming the ‘90s Aqua song, I’m a Barbie Girl, thanks to the uber pink visual.

Gosling in stone washed denims, platinum-blonde hair and, taut and tanned six-pack abs has left fans baffled and drooling, both at the same time. The hard-to-miss underwear waist, with Ken emblazoned, gives a certain indication of Ken’s character—a himbo.

Earlier in April, the studio had released Margot Robbie’s first look as Barbie at Las Vegas’ Cinema Con. In a blue and white striped halter top, polka dot hairband and matching jewellery, driving a convertible pink Chevrolet Corvette, Margot Robbie looks like the real-life incarnate of the Barbie dolls that came pristinely packaged in cartons.

In India, every little girl growing up in the ‘90s coveted the blonde-haired, blue-eyed doll with the prettiest dresses and happiest smile. The accessories and paraphernalia that came along with a Barbie doll were prized possessions while the more elaborate sets (bedroom, living room, kitchen and more) were always on the wish list. The three-tiered Barbie dollhouse was the ultimate achievement for any girl. In the middle of it all, Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend, didn’t make the aspirational cut for most—maybe Ryan Gosling can change with his portrayal of Ken in Barbie, The Movie.

The film is scheduled to premiere in September 2023. The plot of Barbie, The Movie is said to have a multiverse-theme with multiple actors playing different versions of Ken and Barbie. The screenplay is written by Greta Gerwig, who will also direct the film. The odd combination of character and creator has generated a lot of curiosity. The cast for Barbie, The Movie includes Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Will Ferrell, Hari Nef, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emerald Fennell, and Rita Arya amongst others.
