Is the show based on real-life events?

The show makers call Bobby Deol's Aashram a work of fiction, but upon scrutiny, many have found the show to resemble the life of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda.

If you're not familiar with his story, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is a disgraced spiritual leader who is currently serving his time in jail for having raped two of his female followers. The makers don't claim that Aashram is inspired by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s life, but the story is representative of the lives and deeds of many spiritual gurus who have been tried in the past for their wrong-doings under the pretence of serving God and mankind.
