From being a model and an actor to a fitness diva, style editor and entrepreneur — Malaika Arora is quite the inspiration, if we really had to choose someone from the world of Indian entertainment. She might not be the only one, and definitely not the only who had to endure her fair share of challenges, but is definitely a frontrunner. But in her own words, “what carried me through was the belief in my own strength and resilience”. Now that’s message for a T-shirt.

Of all her achievements, Malaika is particularly proud of The Label Life, an online fashion brand that was launched 11 years ago. She along with celebrity interior designer Susanne Khan, actor and model Bipasha Basu gave The Label Life a beautiful presentation, collaborating with lifestyle brands to curate collections for everyday fashion, home etc.

And now, she’s going to present her brand, The Label Life, for its first runway show at Godrej L'Affaire, an experiential luxury lifestyle platform, on March 29, where she’ll showcase the brand’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection centred around Picnic, Party, and Office.

In an interview with Zee Zest, Malaika talks about fashion, food and much more. Excerpts:

1. As an entrepreneur in the fashion industry, you’ve seen the sector change over the years, what has Indian fashion done right in the past 6-7 years, and what can it do better?

Indian fashion has made remarkable progress in recent years, embracing diversity, inclusivity, and innovation. Designers and brands have celebrated traditional craftsmanship while also embracing global trends and technologies. However, there's still work to be done in promoting inclusivity and accessibility within the industry. Events such as Godrej L’Affaire play a vital role in championing these values, fostering collaboration, and driving meaningful progress in the fashion landscape.

2. Do you think fashion (prêt or couture) in India is slowly breaking out of the whole standard size phenomenon and being more size-friendly?

Absolutely, there's a growing awareness and acceptance of diverse body types in the fashion industry. Designers and brands are increasingly prioritizing inclusivity and offering a range of sizes to cater to all consumers. This shift towards size-friendliness is empowering individuals to express themselves authentically through fashion.

3. Who are some of your favourite designers?

Some of my favourite designers who embody this ethos include Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Anita Dongre, and Manish Malhotra.

4. What is your go-to outfit?

My go-to outfit reflects my personal style, blending comfort with sophistication. I love versatile pieces that can transition seamlessly from day to night, such as tailored separates or a chic jumpsuit. The Label Life offers a range of timeless yet contemporary pieces that align perfectly with my aesthetic, making it effortless to curate stylish looks for any occasion.

5. You’ve inspired thousands of other women to take charge of their lives – but your personal journey could not have been easy. Any pointers you’d like to share with the women of today?

Growing up, I faced my share of challenges, but what carried me through was the belief in my own strength and resilience. Every morning, I remind myself of the importance of self-love, determination, and staying true to my values. I encourage women today to embrace their uniqueness, prioritise their well-being, and pursue their dreams with unwavering confidence.

6. A life surrounded by glamour and attention – how do you get away from it all? Where do you draw your boundaries when it comes to media or for that matter any person you interact with?

In the midst of a busy schedule, finding moments of tranquility is essential for maintaining balance. I prioritise self-care and make time for activities that rejuvenate my mind and body, like yoga. When it comes to media and personal interactions, I establish clear boundaries to protect my privacy and mental well-being.

7. What are the three things you’d say that you’d never compromise on?

Three principles I hold dear and never compromise on are integrity, authenticity, and self-respect. These values shape my actions and interactions, both on and off the stage.

8. You love traveling – three countries/cities you’d go back to in a heartbeat?

Traveling is a passion of mine, and there are several destinations that hold a special place in my heart. Three countries/cities I would love to revisit include Bali for its natural beauty and spiritual energy, Paris for its romance and timeless charm, and New York City for its vibrant culture and endless possibilities. Each of these destinations offers a unique experience that leaves a lasting impression.

9. What are some of your favourite things to eat when you’re at home, any guilty pleasures?

At home, I enjoy indulging in wholesome meals that nourish both body and soul. I prioritise fresh, seasonal ingredients and love experimenting with healthy recipes. However, I do have a weakness for truffle pizza – it's my guilty pleasure that I savour in moderation.
