Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the next joint venture between Sony and Marvel, features Tom Holland reprising his role as the web-slinger in the official trailer.
Releasing on the 31st of July, the film reunites Tom Holland for his fourth solo Spider-Man feature and eighth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is Holland's first appearance in the role since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which reunited Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men and earned over $1.9 billion worldwide. At the beginning of this new chapter, Peter Parker is seen beginning his adventure all by himself, with a new suit and the status quo reset.
The build-up to Spiderman: Brand New Day
Swing back with Spider-Man, Tom Holland! Spider-Man: Brand New Day, his fourth solo film, has an assured first trailer that you can watch now. This picture is a huge improvement over Spider-Man: No Way Home, the previous instalment, which was plagued with doubt and ambiguity. Negotiations between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures over the character's role in the MCU put the third picture in jeopardy.
Producers such as Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige hinted at or outright announced the possibility of a fourth Spider-Man picture set within the MCU as the premieres and advertising for No Way Home began. Fans were surprised to see that, unlike Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), Peter Parker stayed in that reality in No Way Home. However, his circumstances changed so much that a fourth picture may serve as a gentle relaunch for the Amazing Spider-Man, according to some.
Which is why now is a good moment to compile all the information we have about Brand New Day to date and see if we can figure out what Peter needs to do before the next MCU storyline ends and whether he can find a way to simplify his life.
An inside look at the trailer
Former best friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) run into Peter in the trailer, still confused about his identity. They seem to know who Spider-Man is, though, just like everyone else in New York.
Frank Castle, or the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, is one of the characters that Spidey encounters in the teaser. Spider-Man and the anti-hero from "Daredevil: Born Again" don't appear to have a particularly cordial relationship. In addition to Michael Mando's Scorpion, Boomerang (whose casting is still up in the air), the Hand, and an unseen enemy, the teaser shows Spider-Man fighting these villains.
Peter also goes to see Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) while he's not in his Hulk form to understand his own physical condition. Concerningly, Spider-Man now can create organic webs, suggesting that his DNA may be undergoing a mutation. An enigmatic voiceover, reminiscent of Keith David, ends the trailer by hinting at its possible meaning. Instead of getting beyond that truth, the trailer sticks with it. Peter stands back and observes MJ and Ned, mentally practising his response to telling the truth but never really saying it. Still reeling after the death of Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), he has severed all links to his civilian existence, living full-time as Spider-Man in a city that has forgotten his identity.
How do the Marvel Comics play in
The trailer's overarching theme is a problem with Peter's abilities. On multiple occasions, Peter acts as if he is clumsy or has little control of his web. The concept of organic webbing, in which Spider-Man spins webs without the use of any external machinery, provides an explanation for the issue in subsequent episodes. Often associated with more profound physiological shifts, this adaptation is depicted in Marvel Comics as silk produced by glands in his wrists. His eyes going black every so often in the trailer suggests a more violent and unexpected alteration, which may be influencing his physiology. According to the teaser, this mutation is part of a bigger one.
Another image suggests a more substantial metamorphosis than a mere technical glitch; it shows Peter awakening within a web cocoon. This is based on story arcs from various comic books, including The Amazing Spider-Man #100, in which Peter undergoes further mutations, and The Other, in which he is reincarnated after transforming into a cocoon. Although it doesn't explicitly state it, the trailer gives the impression that something that severe is happening.
Sadie Sink joins the cast
Curious about a new addition to the Spider-Man Brand New Day cast? The teaser significantly teases Sadie Sink's character, with most rumours at the time being based on speculation rather than confirmed facts. Several chaotic situations, including ones where people seem to be behaving under some sort of outside control, feature fleeting glimpses of a masked figure at their center. The trailer doesn't show Sink's face at those points, so it may be that the camera is shifting between scenes to make it look like she's in another one. What we can see is that there is a threat based on mind control or possession, and the ability seems to be passed from one person to another. Spider-Man is seen talking to someone who seems like a police official about this.
