The T20 Victory
One of the best moments of 2024, India won the Twenty20 World Cup in Barbados on June 29, 2024, and the outpouring of support from supporters online indicates that the joy around the nation's second World Cup triumph in the shortest format is still going strong. India finally won the World Cup in a thrilling final against South Africa at Bridgetown, after remaining undefeated for eight matches. The final score was seven runs. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both declared their retirement from 20-20 internationals shortly after India's victory. After returning home, the team was greeted with an unforgettable reception in Mumbai. Lakhs of people flocked to the streets to see the champions' triumph parade in an open-top bus and the event culminated with a felicitation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium. When we rewind 2024, this moment will be on repeat!
Sabyasachi makes history at The Met as the first Indian designer
One of the best things that happened in 2024, was our favourite designer making big strides! With an unmatched talent for fusing traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, Sabyasachi has become one of the most prominent Indian designers, known for his luxurious and enduring collections. Famous for his meticulous craftsmanship and love of ornate decorations, Sabyasachi's creations pay homage to India's illustrious past while conjuring an air of royal magnificence. With his one-of-a-kind creations and, sometimes, his varied looks, the guy never fails to stir attention. The elusive designer made history at the 2024 Met Gala, becoming the first Indian designer to grace the prestigious carpet. Alia’s dreamy saree was one of our favourite sartorial moments of 2024!
Gukesh wins the World Chess Championship
A champion hugging his father- one of the best moments of 2024! An exceptionally hard-fought 2024 FIDE World Championship in Singapore abruptly came to a close when the Chinese defending champion, GM Ding Liren, made a mistake in the last classical game, ushering in the era of India's GM Gukesh Dommaraju as chess world champion. To become the world's unofficial chess champion, Gukesh is one of only 18 players. It was accomplished while he was just 18 years old. He follows in the footsteps of legendary GM Garry Kasparov, who succeeded GM Anatoly Karpov in 1985 and was four years younger than him. Kasparov, in turn, was a few months younger than GM Magnus Carlsen, who succeeded GM Viswanathan Anand, India's first world champion, in 2013 and is also a contender for the greatest of all time.
India's Olympic shooting triumph
When we revisit 2024, this is one of the best moments that makes us smile! Historically a pastime of (mostly male) Indian nobility, shooting has seen a phenomenal metamorphosis in the country. Manu Bhaker became the first athlete from independent India to ever win two medals at the same Olympics when she and Sarabjot Singh won the 10m air pistol mixed team event and the women's 10m air pistol event in the just-concluded Paris Olympics. Bronze in the men's 50-meter rifle three-position event went to Swapnil Kusale, a ticket collector for the Indian Railways in Pune. Many people, from young athletes to seniors looking for a new pastime, have taken up shooting after seeing the success of Indian competitors in Paris. Truly one of the best things that happened in 2024!
Chef Vikas Khanna wins big
Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna's latest endeavour, Bungalow, in New York City, has been awarded the Michelin 2024 Bib Gourmand Award, a testament to the fruitful results of his hard work and commitment. In case you were wondering, Chef Vikas dedicated Bungalow to his mom and sister when he inaugurated it in March 2024. Ever since it opened, the restaurant has been a sanctuary for New York City foodies seeking authentic Indian cuisine. Despite being located in the heart of New York City's thriving restaurant scene, Bungalow has succeeded in carving out a niche for itself. The Michelin Bib Gourmand Award is presented to restaurants that provide excellent cuisine at affordable rates, as stated on the Michelin Guide website. Chef Khanna being awarded for his life’s work is truly one of the best moments of 2024!
Triumphs of Payal Kapadia
Winner of the coveted Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year was Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine as Light, which starred Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam. Also, at the illustrious Gotham Awards 2024, All We Imagine as Light was named Best International Feature. It is also speculated that Payal Kapadia might get an Oscar nomination for Best Director this year! An Indian-female-led movie getting the recognition it deserves—it truly makes it to the most memorable moments of Rewind 2024!
