Already a popular pilgrimage site, Rishikesh is hoping to draw even more visitors with its big Bajrang Setu engineering project, which is India’s first glass bridge. The Bajrang Setu, currently under construction, is reportedly the first glass-door suspension bridge in India and is ready to be opened to the public in April. The bridge, which overlooks the Ganga River, will undergo a round of technical testing before its public unveiling. Curious about Bajrang Setu in Rishikesh? Here’s everything you need to know!

The significance of Bajrang Setu

Lakshman Jhula was a popular destination in Rishikesh for many years. Standing over the bridge would be a photo that even you would have. Its 1929 construction meant it could span the Ganga River, but it also served as a link between religious practice and secular life. Unfortunately, it was closed to the public in 2019 because to structural degradation and safety concerns. In 2023, the construction of Bajrang Setu began by the Uttarakhand Public Works Department (PWD) to provide current safety standards while maintaining this spiritual connection. Upon completion, it will replace the previous suspension bridge in an environmentally conscious, aesthetically pleasing, and safe manner.

"Bajrang Setu" is a name with profound mythological significance. This dance is a tribute to Lord Hanuman, who represents steadfastness and power, and is also called Bajrang Bali. It is said that during the exile, Lakshman, Lord Ram's brother, crossed the River Ganga here on a jute bridge, and the bridge is dedicated to him as well. Devotees travelling to Rishikesh and Haridwar consider the site sacred due to this myth. Ganga Aarti, meditation sessions, and pilgrim rites will now take place against a magnificent new backdrop in the same grounds as the original Lakshman Jhula.

Bajrang Setu is going to help tourism

Standing at 132 meters in length, the Bajrang Setu project is anticipated to cost approximately ₹70 crore. Pedestrians can enjoy the glass walkway, while light cars can use the solid central lane, according to a News18 article.

The Bajrang Setu would improve connectivity between the Yamkeshwar region and the Rishikesh-Badrinath route, making it a tourist landmark upon its opening. It also possesses practical value.

The famous Laxman Jhula, which has been closed since 2022 because of safety concerns, is just a short distance away from the Bajrang Setu. The Bajrang Setu, with its glass walkways that provide a direct view of the Ganga flowing below, might thereby re-inject the zone's tourism appeal. Businesses in the region, who suffered when the Laxman Jhula closed, are hoping to see a resurgence thanks to the Bajrang Setu.

Travellers go to the picturesque town of Rishikesh for a variety of activities, including yoga, meditation, and exciting experiences, earning it the reputation as both the "Yoga capital of the world" and the "adventure capital of India." In addition to the many yoga retreats and meditation centres that dot Rishikesh, the city also offers exciting activities like white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and trekking.

Ideal time to visit Bajrang Setu and Rishikesh

October through June is peak tourist season in Rishikesh. Rafting, bungee jumping, and yoga retreats are all in full flow, and the weather couldn't be better. During the monsoon months (July to September), high water levels result in the closure of adventurous activities. April 2026 will mark the perfect time to experience Bajrang Setu once the bridge opens to the public.
