India’s bleeding blue with the T20 World Cup 2026 win! And apart from winning every Indian’s heart last night, team India created several records, making this India T20 world cup win nothing less than historic! Keep reading to learn about the records we broke this year.

India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win makes for some interesting stats!

As Team India made history by hoisting the ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy, the world's largest cricket arena, Narendra Modi Arena in Ahmedabad, was swept up in a tempest of emotions. As they defeated New Zealand by 96 runs on a historic night in Ahmedabad, Team India became the first side to win the Men's T20 World Cup three times and the first team to defend the championship, and they could do it at home. After scoring 321 runs, Sanju Samson was named the man of the tournament for the T20 World Cup! And for Boom Boom Bumrah, nothing less than the honour of being the player of the match T20 World Cup would suffice!

But what is the T20 World Cup history of India? The T20 World Cup 2026 stats paint a storied climb! This is India's third consecutive triumph, following 2007 and 2024. England (2010) and the West Indies (2012) have each won the title twice. Additionally, no team had ever advanced past the semifinals of the men's T-20 World Cup before India became the first to win the tournament in back-to-back years. Also, no team had ever won a tournament while playing at home before India.

Here’s a quick rundown of the T20 World Cup 2026 stats that India clinched with the win!

  • In the men's T-20 World Cup 2026, India's record against New Zealand is 1-3. All three of India's prior encounters with New Zealand ended in defeat. Until now, India's sole undefeated opponent in this tournament has been Sri Lanka.
  • India's final score of 255 for 5 versus New Zealand is the highest in T-20 International playoff or knockout play. The previous record was set in the semi-final match against England, when they scored 253 runs for 7. It ranks as the third-highest score in a men's T-20 World Cup match, regardless of the team.
  • In the Group A final of the Sub-Regional Europe Qualifier in 2024, Italy scored 244 runs against Romania in a T20 International final, which was the previous greatest total by any team. Leading up to Sunday's T20 World Cup final, no side had scored 200 runs or more.
  • When competing in the men's T20 World Cup, India's 96-run victory over New Zealand stands as their best margin of victory by runs. Their previous best score came earlier in this World Cup, against Namibia, when they scored 93. The 96-run loss is the largest margin of defeat for New Zealand in this tournament. Ahmedabad has been the site of two of New Zealand's three worst T20 International defeats at the hands of India.
  • Jasprit Bumrah achieved his first four-wicket haul in T20 Internationals. His four-for in the men's T20 World Cup final makes him one of just two bowlers to do so. Against the West Indies in 2012, Ajantha Mendis contributed 4 wickets for 12.
  • Batsman Abhishek Sharma set a new record for the fastest fifty in a T20 World Cup elimination game against New Zealand, reaching the landmark in just 18 balls. Finn Allen hit his previous best off 19 balls in a match against South Africa, and Jacob Bethell hit his previous best off 18 balls in a semi-final match earlier this week against India.
  • Sanju Samson achieved the highest score in a T20 World Cup final, scoring 89 against New Zealand. Kane Williamson also scored 85 runs versus Australia in 2021, while Marlon Samuels scored 85 runs undefeated in 2016 against England.
  • After Shahid Afridi in 2009 and Virat Kohli in 2014, Samson became just the third batter in men's T20 World Cup history to score fifty in both the semi-final and final. It was Tim Seifert's fifty in the pursuit that made him the fourth.
  • Abhishek and Samson's 98-run partnership in the men's T20 World Cup 2026 final is the best by an opening duo since it beats the previous record of 48 runs held by Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan in 2009 against Sri Lanka.

Even though the batters initiated the game, India's reliable bowling lineup ultimately put an end to it. Two years after leading India to the Cup victory, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah once again took the lead. Bumrah successfully ended the chase with a score of 4/15 in four overs, while Patel dominated the opposition with a score of 3/27 in three overs. The bowler's four-wicket haul made history in the T20 World Cup final. And as the final wicket fell, it wasn’t just a victory — it was a reminder that when pressure peaks, India’s bowlers rise to script history.
