The Ultimate Guide To Creating A Trans-Seasonal Wardrobe

8 classic style staples that work for your beach or mountain getaway.

Geetika Sachdev

A quintessential wardrobe for new-age women has moved beyond convention — after all, there’s a greater motivation to break barriers and express freedom through fashion. A step has already been taken in the right direction, with the fashion industry undergoing a style revolution in every way. Until a few years ago, who would have thought that a handful of classic pieces can be styled to exude grace and glamour through all seasons? No, this is no longer a utopian concept, thanks to the introduction of trans-seasonal clothing.

As the name suggests, a trans-seasonal wardrobe transcends the concept of seasons, so you could flaunt the same outfit at a beach or in a hill town. Sounds cool, doesn’t it? This is particularly fun for travellers who jet set from one location to another, and spend most of their time in temperature-controlled conditions.

From Abraham and Thakore to Arpita Mehta, and Nikhil Thampi to Eka, the leading names in the world of fashion have embraced this trend and several other homegrown fashion brands have also joined the bandwagon.

Now that we know what a trans-seasonal wardrobe really means, what is the best way to put it together? Are there certain styles or techniques that make the cut? Are certain pieces a mandate when it comes to creating this look? All your questions will be answered right here by some of the most well-known names in this space.

The capsule staples

1. Back to basics

You may be excited about creating an unforgettable look, but you can’t do anything without the basics. Pooja Baheti, Founder of Poppi, believes there is nothing more indispensable than good quality and neutral pieces that can last you through any season. These can be pieces that can be styled up or down, say, for instance, a classic black or white tee. She also recommends going for classic cuts instead of passing trends that may last only for a season.

For Aaina Mahajan, Founder and Creative Director, Mellow Drama, shirts in breathable cotton and linen work well for trans-seasonal dressing.

“Whites and stripes are also evergreen, since these can be worn oversized with wide-leg pants or over a t-shirt teamed up with a shirt for a more relaxed look. They can also be tucked into jeans accessorised with a striking belt for a more fitted look,” she adds.

Yogesh Kabra, Founder of XYXX, a premium innerwear brand for men, shares that there's nothing more timeless and trans-seasonal than basic T-shirts, in an array of colours. After all, these move effortlessly from day to night, and season to season.

“Pair them with shorts or joggers in the summer, and throw on a denim jacket in fall,” he says.

2. Blaze it up with the classic blazer

There’s nothing that’s more versatile than a work-to-weekend blazer that can elevate your look in an instant! It looks elegant and timeless, and if well-tailored, can be a head-turner in every way. It’s also not too heavy and can work for all seasons.

“A classic blazer in lightweight fabric and a neutral colour is always a chic staple to invest in. It’s a timeless piece that works well in a trans-seasonal wardrobe, but could also be worn all year round, depending on how one teams it up,” says Aaina.

3. Turn up your cool quotient with a denim jacket

A cool denim jacket is a must-have in your wardrobe and truly a lifelong investment. Whether it’s summer or winter, this piece will keep you in style during all seasons. Layer it with a pair of jeans, wear a cool tee underneath, and you already have a winner!

“A well-fitted denim jacket goes a long way in elevating your look, no matter what the season. Frayed or solid, sleeves rolled up or down, it is a staple on a cool summer evening or a sunny winter afternoon,” shares Yogesh.

One could also throw in a denim jacket on any outfit to help transition the look from day to night. “You can wear this over a nice dress or team it up with jeans for a denim on denim look,” adds Aaina.

4. Create a statement

Do not miss out on statement pieces, if you are putting together a trans-seasonal wardrobe. Rhea Bhattacharya, Founder of Drawn, advises wearing them as is or layering them under/over other pieces.

“A beautiful printed shirt in bright colours is a great investment. It is something that you can dress up or down with accessories — layer under jackets or sweaters during cold weather. Co-ord sets are another great investment — you can pair them up together as well as enjoy them as separates,” she adds.

5. The scarf

A scarf is the only accessory you need to really take your look from drab to fab! Wear it long or tie it up in knots; you could also wrap it around your head. Versatile and chic, it is a piece that’s a must-have for all seasons!

6. A pleated skirt

Skirts are both feminine and flirty, and can help you flaunt a vibrant look! You could pair them with pretty slip-ons or flats on hot days, or turn up the heat with your favourite ankle boots. Be it a casual brunch or a happening party, these will take you places and how!

“A pleated skirt is also apt for this season and can be teamed up with a nice cotton vest or blouse, depending on the occasion,” says Aaina.

Preeti Jain of Nirmooha has a style suggestion. “Don't hesitate to pick shorts, skirts, and new patterns offered in the market like the sheer tops and edgy skirts,” she says.

7. Dress up your look with dresses

If there’s one classic that will never go out of style, it is the little black dress or LBD. It can also double as a tunic and be worn over trousers. Don’t forget to slip into a pair of sexy heels and create a striking look with a pair of gorgeous accessories.

Luxury fashion designer, Nikita Mhaisalkar, recommends having lots of slip dresses in your wardrobe. “They are a perfect bet for evenings. Layer them with a spring coat from April to September, and a lined trench for that seamless classic style,” she says.

8. Channel your comfort with joggers and track pants

“Joggers are the best investment in any man's wardrobes. From a grocery run to a night out, joggers are versatile and fit across situations. Add these in muted tones of black, grey, and blue, so that they can be paired with a variety of clothing and remain a seamless style statement in any weather,” adds Yogesh.

The secret behind every great wardrobe is investing in pieces that are comfortable first. Once that is a given, the ease of carrying off an outfit, be it in the summer or winter, is unmatched. Joggers and track pants also make for a great travel wardrobe, especially for long-haul flights.

Tips to nail trans-seasonal dressing

  • Add layers, sleeves, and own an eclectic range of trenches to get trans-seasonal layering right, says Preeti. Since this wardrobe has to run for a long timeline, quality clothing always proves to be a great investment.
  • Non-lined spring trench coats, a summer jacket with beautiful prints, a broad/wide bottom formal cotton pants, and a fine suit go all the way across seasons, advises Nikita.
  • “A knitwear cardigan is a good way to add another layer to your outfit. You can opt for this in fresh pop colours or in neutral warm tones of beige and browns,” shares Aaina.
  • “A sure shot way of making your summer wardrobe transition seamlessly into a winter one would be through layering. A denim jacket, a comfortable hoodie, or even a puffer jacket will allow your basics to move through seasons, catering to the temperature and the need of the hour,” says Yogesh.
  • A neat pair of kicks will always be in style, all 365 days a year. Invest in sneakers with a pop of colour to elevate your style and add a playful touch to an otherwise basic outfit, recommends Yogesh.
