Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma recently auctioned some of her favourite maternity clothes online to promote circular fashion. From the polka dot dress that she wore to announce her pregnancy, to her head-turning red and floral midis from the IPL, and more, the actor sold out all her maternity wardrobe staples online to raise funds to support maternal health.
The actor, after giving maternity fashion goals in the past months now decided to put those handpicked clothes from her maternity closet for an auction aimed at driving a small behavioural change that can have a positive impact on the ecosystem. "During my pregnancy, I realised that this transient time is perfect to participate in the circular fashion economy," the actor had said, adding, "These are pieces we will wear for a few months, so when I learned more about the resources that go into making them, I thought it was crucial to build an ecosystem through which we can share our clothes and buy from each other!”
Announcing the auction in an Instagram post, Sharma had mentioned, "I'm thrilled to launch my new initiative, through which I've shared some of my favourite maternity wear for an online charity sale, with proceeds supporting maternal health through SNEHA . Fun fact: if even just one per cent of pregnant women in urban India bought one piece of preloved maternity clothing over newly manufactured, each year we can conservatively save about as much water as a person drinks in over 200 years."
SNEHA is a non-profit organisation that works with women, children and public health and safety systems, with an aim to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity, child malnutrition and gender-based violence.
Sharma had also informed that the environmental savings of buying these preloved maternity clothes will amount to over 2.5 lakh litres of drinking water. She gave birth to her daughter Vamika Kohli on January 11, 2021.
As an entrepreneur, Sharma has a clothing line, NUSH, that was launched in 2017. Prior to this, in 2015, she became a film producer with films such as NH10 followed by Pari, Phillauri, and her last 2020 Netflix releases, Bulbbul and Paatal Lok. The actor first hit the limelight in 2008, as the lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Sharma has also been recognised for her work in films such as Band Baja Baaraat, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Sultan and PK.
