How Mama Earth was founded
In 2016, the husband-wife duo—Varun and Ghazal Alagh—co-founded Honasa Consumer Pvt Ltd and launched MamaEarth, the first toxin-free Indian brand for mothers and babies. As the couple themselves said, Mama Earth was born out of “parental stress”. It all started with the birth of their first son. The Indian market was flooded with products filled with toxins and the couple was finding it hard to treat their infant son’s skin condition with the products available here. Talking to other parents, they realized that a lot of them were unhappy with the quality of Indian products and that they had to order “suitable” products from the US through friends and family. The couple later made it their mission to make safe, toxin-free products available to all babies in India.
“We found there were certain toxins that were banned in countries outside India and were declared to be harmful to baby skin but were still being widely used here. And that is what led us to think that somebody should do something about it,” the MamaEarth founder said in an interview.
