It’s a given that whenever Farhan Akhtar posts anything on his social media, a majority of the comments have people asking him when he’s planning to come up with Don 3, the sequel to the successful Don and Don 2. This is no surprise either; when a movie does well, it is but natural for makers to cash in on the success and come up with a sequel, as well as for fans to expect a follow-up.
The recent success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 also showed us if you have a good script and talented actors, then it is possible to pull off a sequel which is as good (or almost as good) as the original. One of the biggest musical successes, 1990’s Aashiqui saw a blockbuster sequel in 2013 with Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur. Now, with the recent announcement of the third instalment of the franchise with Kartik Aaryan in the lead has made us curious about other sequels in the pipeline.
Here are 8 Hindi movie sequels you can expect to see in the theatres in the near future.
1. Dostana 2
Ever since the makers announced the sequel to the 2008 rom-com Dostana starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, and Priyanka Chopra, there was much anticipation about the casting of the film. Filming finally began with Janhavi Kapoor, Kartik Aaryan, and newcomer Lakshya in 2019, but just a few days later, Kartik walked out of the movie. There have been talks of his ‘unprofessional behaviour’ being the reason for the fallout but for now, there have been no more announcements about who will replace the Luka Chuppi star.
2. Oh My God 2
Judging by the poster and promotion material, Akshay Kumar who played Krishna in the original 2012 movie, seems to be playing an avatar of Shiva this time around. The comedy film together brings the fresh pairing of AK and Yami Gautam, and has been shot extensively in Ujjain by director Amit Rai. Paresh Rawal who had a major role in the first movie, will not be returning for the sequel. Instead, it will be interesting to watch the very talented Pankaj Tripathi share screen space with the superstar.
3. Tiger 3
The third instalment of the action-packed Tiger saga starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif only seems to be getting bigger with each outing. Reportedly, Emraan Hashmi plays the antagonist in the movie and the makers have also roped in Shah Rukh Khan for a special sequence. Salman shared a small glimpse of the movie on his social media telling his fans to expect the movie to be released on April 21, 2023 in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
4. Fukrey 3
The fun gang of Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh, and Ali Fazal are back in the third instalment of their crazy Fukrey caper, with Richa Chadha joining as local gangster Bholi Punjaban. Director Mrigdeep Singh Lamba confirmed the shoot wrapped up of the film in June this year with a post on his social media. The earlier films, released in 2013 and 2017 respectively, were both commercial hits and the third outing has been highly anticipated.
5. Go Goa Gone 2
Three friends wanting to chill in Goa, a fake Russian mafioso, and a couple of zombies—the plot of Raj and Krishna DK’s 2013 ‘zomcom’ was as whacky as it could get, and it delivered on its promise. The sequel of the Saif Ali Khan-starrer was expected to start much earlier but got delayed because of the pandemic. Most of the original cast including Saif, Kunal Kemmu, and VirDas are expected to join in the crazy ride for the next crazy ride.
6. Hera Pheri 3
Counted among one of India’s finest cult comedies, Hera Pheri brought together the memorable trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal in 2000. A sequel came out in 2006 and ever since, there has been talk of a third instalment of the movie. Recently, producer Firoz Nadiadwala confirmed in an interview with a publication that the third instalment is indeed on track and that it will have its original cast. Just a few days ago, Akshay and Suniel’s banter on social media, on the former’s birthday, more or less confirmed Nadiadwala’s statement.
7. Gadar 2
Nearly two decades after delivering the blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which had Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead, director Anil Sharma announced the sequel of the film last year. Set against the backdrop of India’s struggle for independence and the consequent Partition of the country, the 2001 original told the love story of Tara (Sunny) and Sakeena (Ameesha). The sequel is expected to take their story forward.
8. Ishq Vishq Rebound
Ishq Vishq, in 2003, gave tinsel-town a new sweetheart in the form of Shahid Kapoor. The romantic caper was a smash hit and now, all these years later, Ishq Vishq Rebound will see a new set of youngsters including Pashmina Roshan, Jibraan Khan, Naila Grewal, and Rohit Saraf (of the Mismatched fame) try their luck in the college romance. Pashmina is Hrithik Roshan’s niece while audiences will know Jibraan from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham where he was a child actor.
