In today’s fast-paced world, where processed foods and irregular eating habits have become the norm, acidity has emerged as a common yet disruptive health concern. The uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest, sour taste in the mouth, bloating, and indigestion are all telltale signs of acid reflux. This is a condition that is triggered by excess stomach acids that flow back into the oesophagus.

Such growing awareness has turned the spotlight back to traditional wisdom and age-old acidity home remedies. With the various acidity homemade remedies standing the test of time, these draw from the pantry and garden to offer not just relief, but also a deeper connection to natural wellness. From calming herbal infusions and alkalizing fruits to time-tested spices that soothe the stomach lining, nature provides an abundant toolkit to restore digestive balance without harsh chemicals.

What causes acidity?

Although acidity may often seem like a simple discomfort, its roots lie in a complex mix of dietary habits and lifestyle choices.

  1. Irregular eating habits- Skipping meals, overeating, or eating at inconsistent times can wreak havoc on your digestive system.
  2. Spicy, oily, and processed foods- A diet rich in fried foods, spicy dishes, processed snacks, and carbonated drinks can overstimulate acid production.
  3. Caffeine and alcohol- Coffee, tea, and alcoholic beverages are known to relax the LES, making it easier for acid to escape into the oesophagus. Moreover, if consumed in excess on an empty stomach they can significantly contribute to acid reflux.
  4. Lack of physical activity- A sedentary lifestyle slows down metabolism and digestion. Lying down immediately after meals or sitting for long hours can increase the risk of acid reflux.
  5. Smoking- Nicotine is known to weaken the LES as well as stimulate acid production.
