Dharmendra Passes Away At 89—India Mourns A Legend

Veteran actor Dharmendra has died at age 89. Bollywood and India pay heartfelt tribute to the icon whose six-decade career defined an era of cinema.

The passing of famous actor Dharmendra, who was 89 years old when he passed away in Mumbai, has left Bollywood in deep mourning. He was only days away from his 90th birthday. The legendary actor, who was beloved as the "He-Man of Bollywood" for his legendary career spanning six decades and 300 films, was reportedly recovering after being discharged from Breach Candy Hospital. But on the afternoon of November 24, an ambulance was seen driving away from his residence, and a number of famous people made their way to the Pwan Hans cremation in Juhu. Although his loved ones have not yet commented, actor Karan Johar verified the news of his death.

The actor's health had been deteriorating since his admission to the hospital on November 1st, but the exact cause of death remains unknown. Sriram Raghavan's 'Ikkis', featuring Jaideep Ahlawat and Amitabh Bachchan's grandson Agastya Nanda, will be Dharmendra's last feature film. On December 25, 2025, the movie is set to hit theatres.

With a career spanning six decades and three hundred films, Dharmendra has left an unparalleled legacy. The actor has not been doing well since his hospital admission on November 1st, although the cause of death is yet unknown. With Jaideep Ahlawat and Amitabh Bachchan's grandson Agastya Nanda, Sriram Raghavan's 'Ikkis' will be his last feature film. The film's official release date is set for December 25, 2025.

Dharmendra leaves behind a legacy in Bollywood cinema

'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' (2023) and 'Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya' (2024) were among the films in which the late actor enchanted audiences. His flexibility shone through. He handled both roles with ease: acting as a romantic hero in films like 'Phool Aur Patthar' (1966) and 'Aaye Din Bahar Ke,' as well as a rugged action star in films like 'Dharam Veer' and 'Hukumat.' But playing the charming renegade Veeru in Ramesh Sippy's 1975 picture Sholay was the crowning achievement of his acting career. There would be a hole in Hindi film without him. Hema Malini and he became one of the most beloved on-screen couples in Indian cinema because of their immensely hit flicks together. Even in his late 80s, Dharmendra maintained his disco routine and worked with the same vigour. His consistency in posting fitness videos to Instagram allowed him to forge deeper connections with his fans of all ages.

 According to estimates, Dharmendra's net worth ranged from 335 to 450 crores rupees in 2025. Movies, endorsements, and business deals brought in the dough for him. He possessed land holdings in Maharashtra worth more than ₹17 crores, in addition to a lavish farmhouse in Lonavala valued at ₹100 crores. It has been reported that the Deol family's combined wealth is more than ₹1,000 crores.

Dharmendra also dabbled in the hospitality industry, launching eateries like He-Man and Garam Dharam Dhaba on the Karnal Highway. He lived part of the year in his Mumbai mansion and part in his Lonavala farmhouse, which had 100 acres and had a swimming pool, aqua-therapy area, verdant gardens, and other amenities. As a well-known auto lover, Dharmendra owns a vintage Fiat, a Range Rover Evoque, and a Mercedes-Benz SL500.

Dharmendra had a prolific film career, appearing in more than 300 films. He was versatile, appearing as both powerful action heroes and endearing romantic leads. His portrayals of Satyapriya in Satyakam and Veeru in Sholay have left an impression on fans. His production firm, Vijayta Films, was founded in 1983. His sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, were both introduced to the film industry through the company, which produced hits like Betaab and Barsaat. His grandson Karan Deol made his debut with the film Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, which he produced later on. The impact of Dharmendra's filmography on Bollywood was substantial. He was an inspiration to many performers who followed in his footsteps, and audiences adored him in both dramatic and lighter roles. His charisma and performances will live on in the hearts of his admirers forever.

The prolific actor leaves behind a large and tight-knit family. Dharmendra was married twice: first to Prakash Kaur and then to actress Hema Malini, with whom he starred in numerous films. His six children include the Bollywood actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, as well as his daughters Vijeta and Ajeeta from his marriage to Prakash Kaur, and his daughters Esha and Ahana from his marriage to Hema Malini.
