After her power-packed performance in ‘Aarya’, Sushmita Sen is all set to play the character of a transgender in her upcoming web series, ‘Taali’.
The web series directed by Marathi filmmaker Ravi Jadhav is based on the life of transgender activist Gauri Sawant.
In the photograph, the actress, with the big bindi and her hands enacting the the gesture of clapping, sends across a powerful message.
Sharing her first look from the series, Sushmita wrote, “Nothing makes me prouder and more grateful than to have the privilege of portraying this beautiful person and of bringing her story to the world!! Here’s to life and to everyone’s right to live it with dignity!”
The Mumbai activist was seen in ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ season 9 to raise money to build houses for sex workers in Kharghar.
In 2000, Gauri founded an NGO, the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust to help the transgender community with counselling.
For the unversed, Gauri is India’s first transgender mother. She adopted a 16-year-old Gayatri, who was orphaned in 2001, after her mother, a sex worker, succumbed to HIV.
She is also one of the petitioners of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which finally led the Supreme Court of India to identify transgender as the third gender.
