Indian badminton champion PV Sindhu (Pusarla Venkata Sindhu), a double Olympic medallist, won her first women’s singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK.
Sindhu was playing against Michelle Li of Canada, and she won the badminton match after a 21-15 and 21-13 win.
With this gold medal, the Indian badminton player has completed her set of Commonwealth Games medals. She won a bronze medal in 2014, a silver one in 2018, and now, four years later, a gold.
Michelle and Singaporean badminton player Jia Min Yeo won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the Commonwealth Games 2022 singles badminton.
Sindhu has won millions of hearts with this historic win. Droupadi Murmu, President of India, congratulated Sindhu via her official Twitter page. “You created magic on the court, enthralling millions. Your masterly win makes our Tiranga fly high & our national anthem resonate at Birmingham,” read a part of her tweet.
The 26-year-old is one of India’s most successful badminton stars. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, in 2021, Sindhu created history by winning the bronze medal in a match against China’s He Bing Jiao.
The same year, she became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. And the fourth female player in the history of Indian women’s badminton to win medals at two consecutive Olympic Games.
Apart from PV Sindhu, Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen clinched a gold medal at the men’s singles badminton event at the Commonwealth Games 2022. It was his debut campaign at the quadrennial multi-sport spectacle.
