The James Webb Space Telescope is one-of-its-kind telescope that peers into the deep universe. It is also world’s premier space science observatory. It is a partnership between NASA, ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency).
The telescope is made up of 18 hexagonal mirror segments, coated with gold. Each of these segments is 4.3 feet in diameter.
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope was launched in space on December 25, 2021 on an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, South America.
This is the first image that the James Webb Space Telescope captured once assembled in space, taken on July 11, 2022. According to NASA, this is the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date.
Called the ‘Cosmic Cliffs’, this is a young star in the making, in the Carina Nebula. The mountains and valleys you see are made of gases with star speckling the background.
A dimming star in the middle of this nebula, is sending out rings of gas and dust. In a few thousand lightyears, these rings will dissipate.
This is a visual of five galaxies side-by-side known as Stephan’s quintet. James Webb Space Telescope put together the largest image mosaic till date. The image itself is about 1/5th of the moon’s diameter.
This is an extremely clear infrared image of the largest planet of our solar system, Jupiter. Alongside, is a tiny speck of its moon, Europa.
